Spoilers Maul - Shadow Lord Animated Series

Oooh... That's pretty! Love the leather wrap on that. I wonder if that's the first canonical lightsaber they've designed that has leather on it. I can't recall another, but there have been so many...
Nope; Jecki's had a leather wrap, as did Kai's, Cere's, and Ty's. Plus of course Rey added a leather wrap to Anakin's old lightsaber after repairing it, and later what looks like a mix of leather and fabric to her own one (though that may just be brown fabric, not leather at all.)

I’m surprised there aren’t more out there. I’d think it would make for a more effective grip and I think it just looks really good with a leather wrap over bare metal.

Makes sense they'd get working on it and have it ready to go. I imagine there is a lot more story to tell. At minimum I'd say 3 seasons.

Saw the trailer. That clone wars style animation has never looked better . Looking forward to seeing this.

Trailer looks good, I just hope that the Jedi have bigger roles than just to to show off how powerful Maul is

Well here you have the open book era. Through The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch we now have all sorts of pieces in place, and we have destinations and consequences of some pieces known from Solo and Rebels. Now we just get to see where the pieces that survived Order 66 and the Clone Wars go before Rebels. We know Maul will be shadow running Crimson Dawn. We know he will eventually end up stranded. We know Qi'ra will have been at least someone trained by Maul enough to attempt to enact revenge against Palpatine and Vader in the aftermath of the Battle of Hoth. We know Ventress is out there. We know Quinlan Vos is out there. We now The Path is out there. We know Ahsoka is out there and will be joining up with Bail Organa's cell in the near future. We know there are still rebelling Clones out there working to get more of their brothers away from the Empire that is tossing them away in favor of Stormtroopers. We know the Empire is slowly growing as they start getting their new Imperial Star Destroyers online and replace Republic weapons of war with Imperial weapons of occupation. There is a 14 year or so gap between The Bad Batch and Rebels that can (and likely will be) mined for stories. I doubt only with Maul. There are plenty of other things that can be done, btu Maul is an instrument to show the way.

We already know one Jedi, Devon Izara is one of the main characters. We don't know how big of a role he'll play for sure but all of the cast lists also include her master Eeko-Dio Daki.
From what we know of Devon's role in the series it seems pretty likely that either Eeko-Dio ends up dead or him and Devon end up separated somehow.

First two episodes are out and so far so good. Maul is great as always and it's hard not to see a little bit of Ezra in Izara as Maul attempts to seduce her to his way.

Wagner Moura is inspired casting as Lawson and I found myself enjoying his banter with Richard Ayoade's Two-Boots just as much as Maul's machinations.

Yeah, this was definitely a great start to the series.
Maul's machinations were pretty great to watch play out. He's definitely mastered the art of manipulating his enemies to do exactly what he wants, without them even realizing what happened.
The characters are pretty good so far, I'm liking Lawson and Two-Boots a lot, and I'm curious where we're going with Devon. We didn't get a ton yet with Daki, but hopefully we'll see more of him as it goes on.
Watching this, I just could help but be impressed with how far Star Wars animation has come since the early episodes of The Clone Wars.

Sadly, between Palpatine's plot armor and knowledge of Maul's fate in previous series, we'll never see him knock off his old master and reach the full potential of his Sith birthright. A purely tragic character.

I got to tell you that I have some serious trepidations about this series and they all go back to the 2001 Darth Maul novel "Shadowhunter" by Michael Reeves.

It was a book that I was looking forward to reading and I bought it the day it came out. I was enjoying it immensely and found myself really liking the young Jedi and all the supporting characters when it hit me... None of these characters that I've grown attached to are going to make it to the other side of this thing. I closed the book and never finished it.

I don't like "everyone dies" stories. It's why I don't rank "Rogue One" higher in my Star Wars movie rankings. I just don't want to grow attached to a set of characters that are all going to meet the end of a red lightsaber.

ETA-- A police procedural? Not really my thing, but I do trust the creatives to deliver a quality product.

Yeah not bad. Beautiful looking but a bit slow for me in terms of story speed.

I know Maul won't get to see his revenge but what they could do with Izara and beyond (one day live action?) is an exciting prospect. It's all playing out as Maul foresees.

I'm curious if this goes up to Maul's time as head of Crimson Dawn if we might see Dryden Vos and Qi'ra at some point?

Sadly, between Palpatine's plot armor and knowledge of Maul's fate in previous series, we'll never see him knock off his old master and reach the full potential of his Sith birthright. A purely tragic character.
Agreed. That's the problem I always have with prequels involving characters we already know. If I already know how things play out, there is no anticipation. No real chance to be surprised. Its really just filling in story gaps, which isnt anywhere near as exciting as a sequal.

Having said that, I enjoyed the first two episodes. I love the way the animation is lit. Colors are deeper and the score adds just the right vibes.
