Matt Smith's Hollywood career

Doctorwhovian

Fleet Captain
Brought this up a while back-while I'm sure he's doing ok in Britain, especially on stage, not sure about Matt Smith's film career in the USA.

He hasn't been in any of the trailers or promos for Terminator Genesys, and Lost River was a critical flop. The Pride and Prejudice zombie movie will probably mainly appeal to a British audience.

Of course Eccleston and Tennant didn't exactly break through either post-WHO-Eccleston's mainly been doing big budget villain roles (GI Joe, Dark Is Rising, Thor) that really don't show his strengths as an actor, with some exceptions such as Heroes and the Leftovers on TV.

Tennant had the dramedy that was canceled, although like Eccleston he's going to be in the MCU, and a meh crime drama based on Broadchurch, although one of it's Netflix TV spinoffs Jessica Jones as the Purple Man.

Smith's companion Karen Gillian seems to be doing OK though, despite Selfie being cancelled, she did have a somewhat major role as the henchvillain in Guardians Of The Galaxy last summer, and has done some OK horror and comedy work as well. Her looks don't hurt either.

On that note, I wonder if Matt's appearence is a factor? Trying not to be shallow, but he does have that kind of lanky, big chin and forehead look that while perfect for the Doctor isn't exactly leading man material in shallow Hollywood.

TBH I saw him getting offered a lot of quirky best mate type roles. Depends what he wants to be honest, and it can take time to crack Hollywood. A lot of the time it comes down to getting the right role at the right time.

His looks potentially count against him if he's planning on playing a romantic lead, but there are plenty of unconventional looking actors who've made a name for themselves, take Steve Buscemi for example, or someone like Simon Pegg or Chris O'Dowd. In fact it's probably easier to make it as an unconventional bloke than an unconventional looking woman.

Tennant is consistantly getting work and to be honest I think Ecclston's career post Who is probably on a par with his career pre Who. He's a good actor who'll always get work and is happy to do the big budget films every once in a while so he can do the projects that are closer to his heart.

I think Smith's low-profile in Genysis is deliberate on the part of the producers. Even when the cast all appeared on EW, he was on it but they didn't name his character. So the speculation is that there's some big twist about his part. After all, seeing as the trailer blew its load about John Connor's part in this film, they have to have some big surprises up their sleeve (so I hope, anyway).

The flop of Lost River reflects more on Ryan Gosling than on him.

As Starkers said, lots of actors get by with unconventional looks. Nic Cage is still a reasonably big name (despite his own best efforts!) 30 years after making his debut while more movie-star-looking contemporaries have faded into relative obscurity or TV parts. He's unlikely to be a Tom Cruise/Will Smith type megastar but he could well start to do the sort of roles that Johnny Depp used to do and is now getting too old for.

I think in order to break into Hollywood he's to know people(duh)

Shame he has hit the point of oversaturation like Benedict Cumberbatch.

He even had small roles like "August Ossage County", "Twelve years a slave" and I even saw him in the bio pic about Whitey Bulger

I read that at one point Matt was in contention for the lead role of Newt Scamander in the upcoming Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but obviously that didn't happen.

More often than not actors get a breakout role but when it ends they are left back where they started before getting it, which is unfortunate. That's how Hollywood works in regards to television. From what I've seen of Matt, he has amazing range but outside of Doctor Who, he's just not that well-known. As for his unconventional looks, well there are lots of people who "make it" without looking like Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt for example.

If rumors are to be believed, the reason he's not seen in any Terminator trailer is that his role amounts to a cameo. He's not the selling point for the movie. :)

Yeah plus he's pretty unrecognisable in it. I mean to see the film at some point, I have heard that it might be the kind of film that gets critically reapraised over time...maybe!

I don't begrudge him that, it must be weird after working for so many years (and he has been around a long time, the first thing I remember seeing him in was The Last Enemy in 2008, but looks like he was in Spooks years before that though I have no recollection on him) to finally 'make it' I guess when the offers start rolling in there's an urge to take as many as you can in case the bubble bursts. He does seem to be everywhere though!

Depends if his cameo is a shock revelation for the next film where he'll play a larger part or not? (I'm clutching here, I'm not even sure if Genesys is supposed to kickstart more films or be stand alone.)

He also seems be working a lot with the Weinstein company too.

After watching "The Theory of Everything" I though Matt Smith could have easily done the role Eddie did. They looked the same in some parts

AND once again Eddie Redmayne gets the role lol

Matt Smith's character, posing as a Resistance soldier is the T-5000 -- a physical manifestation of Skynet made up of nanobots. When Connor and the Resistance send Reese back in time, the T-5000 reveals itself as a cloud of nano-terminators and kills everyone in the room except Connor, who he half-infects and makes a zombie nano-terminator himself; Reese watches Connor get turned into a Terminator from the inside out as he's beginning to be sent through time.
