Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Off topic I know, but this didn't seem worth necroing the Andromeda thread over, and I just gotta get this out of my brain so I can go about the rest of my evening. OK, so to kill time while we wait for MELE and apropos of nothing in particular; I was just reading though the Andromeda codex and something jumped out at me as being very off, astrophysically speaking.

They have that giant (and I mean *giant*) black hole at the centre of the Heleus Cluster map down as being "12 solar masses". At first blush that seemed VERY light, so I plugged the numbers into Schwarzschild Radius Calculator and sure enough; 12 solar masses would only net you a black hole 35.45km across. That's *tiny*, and this thing is supposed to be so big it has a cluster of 38 star systems orbiting it.

My first though was "maybe it's a typo and they misses a zero or three?" So back to the calculator and I start adding zeroes. Now, I figure a cluster with 38 systems, all more or less along the same plane has to be at least a few light years across, right? OK, so in order for the event horizon to be as big as it looks it's have have be at least 1 ly in diameter, right? Or at least within the ballpark. So how many solar masses would that take? One point two trillion! To put that in perspective; the total estimated mass of the Milky-Way galaxy is something like 1.5 trillion solar masses! Clearly something isn't right here.

Of course I'm inclined to just chalk it up to very poor research or a huge production error of some sort. But let's just suppose for a second that's not the case (though it almost certainly is) what could be going on here? I remember thinking it odd for the black hole to be so prevalent throughout the game but almost never directly referenced in plot or dialogue, and when it is, only in passing. Given what else happened in Helios one has to wonder if it's somehow connected to the scourge and the fate of the Jardaan. What if that's not even a black hole? What if they pulled an 'Expanse' and pissed of some entities in another universe, who sent to scourge out after them and that's actually wormhole or something? What if they were screwing around with mass effect fields and dark energy and someone created a black hole with a much larger event horizon than should be possible with it's measly 12 solar masses? What if it's artificial and the Jardaan are hiding out from the scourge inside that thing?

Interesting..... I like this idea but not enough to pick up the game again. I doubt we'll get a second one either. BTW I always thought the Remnant were somehow an offshoot of the Reapers or a distant cousin.

If the teaser for ME5 is any indication, I don't think they're ditching all of those Andromeda threads (it even mentions the launch of an new ark) so much as shifting perspective back to more familiar territory.

Either way, there's clearly more to the story of the Remnant, the Jardaan and the Scourge than has been revealed, though personally I don't buy the idea that it's something to do with the Reapers, or even just reaper tech. It's outside the Catalyst's purview for one, and for another the tech appears to be all 100% synthetic. No indication of a biological component and nothing resembling indoctrination.

ETA:
My personal suspicion is that the Jardaan are/were something quite unusual: intelligent symbiotic plants (maybe related to the Thorian, maybe not.) It would explain why they went to such lengths to terraform so many planets, why the have such a focus on ambulatory robots to tend to their machines for them (as insect analogues) and why they created the Angara with in-built genetic memory and direct bio-electric machine interface capability. Also explains why you can find giant trees both inside vaults and up on the surface where they have no reason to be, with RemTech imbedded in their roots, seemingly keeping them alive.

If they have any connection to the Reapers at all, it's probably as refugees from a previous cycle; though the same could also apply to the Kett. Hell, Andromeda could be swarming with the decedents of those that fled the Reapers over the eons.

Well that's good that there's a new ME game too.

Did Andromeda sales really do that badly, that there is no sequel?

Hard to say exactly. EA aren't exactly open about their profits (not even to investors) but the impression is that sales were both strong and disappointing; an ongoing issue with AAA launches is that publishers want ALL THE MONEY or else it doesn't count. Never mind if it opened at #3 in the charts and hung around in the top 10 for months (a non-trivial achievement for a mostly single player game.) Though one assumes that if the numbers were *that* strong then they wouldn't have axed the planned DLCs. I can't see them cancelling them for memes an critical press alone.

Well in that case yeah.. EA have always been pretty tight lipped. But like the Reapers they buy up other studios and crush them :)

Probably a combination of EA wanting another game they could monetize via a live subcription and pushing Bioware towards Anthem and the fact that Andromeda didn't do as well as they'd hoped. So when Andromeda didn't do as well, they probably didn't feel like supporting Bioware in making another single-player game. And we know how well that went.

Well this is fun: they've added a little "custom fan art" creator to the official website. It allows you to make your own version of the cover art as a wallpaper, or even a printable replacement slipcover! Kinda sad that it's only for PS4 & XBox One. I know us PC games aren't allowed to have video games in boxes anymore, but it would've been nice to have all the same. Hell, I'd totally buy a blank jewel case and a cheap USB flash drive just so I can store the backup files in it! I mean sod downloading 150gb more than once. With my internet that'd take almost 7 days!

ETA oh and I almost forgot, they also released what looks like the complete soundtrack on youtube, including the new bonus track from Sam Hulick. Click here if you want to skip straight to it, or listen to the whole 4 hour collection below.

That's pretty cool here's my art

And the goodies keep on coming: for a limited time the official site is allowing anyone that wants it to download all of the bonus content that came with the deluxe editions of ME2 & ME3. So basically some comics, art books, a fancy picture, a complete soundtrack, including the aforementioned new bonus track.

Oh and I guess I'll show off my version of the cover too. I don't actually own and XBox, but I might doctor this later to make it look like a PC version.

Pretty fun little feature. I have neither a PS4 or an Xbox, but I went with the Xbox art because it's less intrusive than PS4's.

OK, took a bit of fiddling and forgery but I think I got it looking reasonably credible as the PC version's case (are those even still a thing?)

I like how everyone picks Jack.. She's a popular gal.
We all went with Jack, Ash AND Garrus it seems!
Honestly I just went with Liara since she's my main Shep's LI, and everyone else was just who I usually have on my squad. My main is a Soldier (first playthrough, I had no idea what biotics & tech abilities were about, so I just went the class with all the weapons and armor) so I tend to favour specialists in my squad. Usually either Liara & Tali or Garrus & Wrex in ME1, some combination of Garrus, Morden & Jack for ME2, and Liara & Garrus or EDI for ME3 since the game is almost over by the time Tali shows up.

On subsequent playthoughs however I learned that Miranda is probably (and surprisingly) the most valuable squadmate by a wide margin. Also there's a build for Garrus in ME3 which makes him insanely OP. Like he can take down harvesters & banshees on insanity in *seconds*.

On my first run through of ME1, I went in weapons heavy (so Soldier, Ash and usually Garrus/Wrex) - until I took a side trip to Luna and just thought I'd try Liara. That mission just went so easily, she was on the team as much as possible then.

People should not be quick to assume.
If anything Mass Effect fandom (good and bad) and it's play trough variations/decision making by the fanbase is very diverse.

Personally I only ever tried out these romances. I watched some others on Youtube.
mshep = Ashley, Miranda or no one
femshep = always Traynor (despite her only being in ME3, it's one of the best character and romance arcs)
