Mass Effect (1)

Cool. I am pretty pumped about getting started tonight. The Hammerhead stunk. Please tell me there's no vehicles in ME3?

There's a big mech type-thing that you can pilot (and hijack from enemies) but it's optional, it just makes certain sections of the game easier, and it controls well enough. There are no vehicles like the Mako or Hammerhead.

Is there a trick to hijacking it? Maybe it's because I played an Infiltrator but I could never seem to manage (which is weird, you'd think sniping be be the easiest way).

^I managed it a few times, but honestly, by the time you strip down it's defences, shatter the canopy and kill the driver, the thing isn't in much of a fit state to last long in a fight.

Ironically the ability is disabled in MP. I mean that's where it'd be the most use, no?

During the Grissom Academy mission near the end you can get into one because its pilot is just standing next to it so after you kill him you get it with full health, it made the final part of the mission a massacre for the Cerberus agents

For the trilogy, I feel that Bioware introduced something in either the first or second game, then dropped it in the third game. I think the mechs are an example of this. Why didn't Bioware introduced new types of autonomous mechs, and then say, in a Codex, that Cerberus had these models built to supplement their existing forces? Instead, Bioware developed a human-piloted mech that was susceptible to small arms fire, a window made of glass that could be punctured and doesn't protect the driver, could be disabled with biotics, and its engineering components were vulnerable in the rear. How was this an improvement upon what was introduced in the second game? I have played other mechs (FEAR, Riddick) in other games, and the Cerberus mech was the worst of the three. It's as if the people at Bioware are utterly clueless on how to build a proper and good vehicle segment. Even the Mako was flawed, and, many times in the first game, I resorted to abandoning the vehicle to fight the enemies on foot.

I managed to do it once. I think the trick is to NOT use armor piercing ammo when trying to shatter the canopy, because otherwise you do much damage and end up causing the whole thing to 'splode when you try to kill the driver. I do love how ME3 factors in locational damage like this. Makes precision sniping a joy. :)

Played for about 5 hours tonight. ME3 is great so far. Loved playing with Anderson, even if for only a short while. I kind of like the new galaxy map scan & evade system - makes it so that you have to revisit each cluster after missions.

So far I've made it to the point where I have to do the primary Turian mission. I'll start that tomorrow. Combat seems similar to ME2 but I find myself using the powers a lot more. Had some trouble on the N7 Cerberus Data mission because the enemies kept circling around and attacking from behind. Bastards!

Love having Liara back on my team! I'm kind of cold to the James character so far. Overall, it just felt great to be continuing the Mass Effect story. Looking forward to more tomorrow.

The game really opens up after the Turian mission. Feels rather restrictive before that point as far as where all you can go (especially on the Citadel.) Yeah, it's nice having Liara back for good, and while James is probably my least-used ME3 squad member, at least you can say he isn't as bad as Jacob.

This will help with system scanning. At least on the PC you're able to use an editor to make the scanner cover an entire system in one scan. ;)

Thanks for the link to those maps. That will be handy, especially since some of the scan points aren't near planets, so I was unable to get everything in one go. What happens if the Reapers catch you? I assume game over and you've got to rescan everything.

Forgot to mention, I love that when I imported my character from ME2 he was at the exact same level with the same abilities allocated. Feels like a true continuation. While ME2 felt like a (much-needed) reboot from ME1.

It also looks like the decisions to be made in the ability tree for levels 5-8 of each power are going to be tough to make, since it seems that at least for most of them, the same type of power-up isn't available at a later level. For example, on level 5 of my ammo powers I can choose to allow my team to use those powers, or make them a lot stronger. But I have been choosing to give them to my team since it's my only chance to do so. Same with the "Intel" that I've gotten on a couple missions, I can either power up one thing or the other but not both. I both love and hate making decisions like that.

It might be worth mentioning that *all* of the blips that aren't on planets are just fuel, so it's worth leaving those till last, or not at all. I lost track of the amount of times on my first playthrough that I wasted up one of those because I already had a full tank. On a subsequent playthough, I managed to go the whole game without paying for fuel at all.

It's pretty ridiculous that with an imported character you start around level 30 but with a brand new one you start at level 1. Yeesh, talk about a disadvantage, unlike 2 where you only start at level 5 or so with an import. Even starting at level 30 I could only get my characters to 57 by the end, and that's doing pretty much EVERYTHING. Needed to import them into a new game to get the last three levels. Unfortunately ME3 doesn't have the Long Service Medal achievement from ME2 that gives all your subsequent characters a 25% bonus on all XP earned after finishing the game once. Actually, NONE of ME3's achievements give you any sort of gameplay bonus. Lame.

ETA: Meant to say, glad you're really enjoying it Ood Sigma! I never cared all that much for James either, but that was more down to liking the other party members so much than anything wrong with him.

That I did do, and it was awesome.

Especially since it lets you kill the Cerberus agents that use the big shields real easily seeing as missile beats shield.

Just wait until Mass Effect 4 where Jacob and James are the main characters. :p

Finished the Turian mission - yay Garrus! Then I spent a lot of time on the Citadel doing missions there.

Question - I have received several pieces of armor and yet I have not figured out how to equip them. I did figure out the weapon mods (not a big fan of them so I'm not exactly happen to see them return). How do I equip armor?

Forgot to mention, one thing I don't like is that it's much more difficult in this game to sight key objects in your environment. In ME2 you could tell there was something there halfway across the room. In this one it seems you must be very close and you must be in a direct line of sight with it. Probably more realistic, but I can't help but feel I am missing items to pick up. There have been a couple of weapons that I only caught because I had doubled back to an area. It also makes talking to people on the Citadel a real pain. I searched for nearly 10 minutes once trying to find some doctor in the hospital that the map said was a point of interest character.

Palaven's moon was one of my favourite missions for the visual appeal alone. Having giant Reapers roaming nearby and seeing Palaven hanging the sky and burning really gave off the feeling that it was going to get worse before it got better.

There are consoles in Shepard's quarters and in the shuttle bay that lets you customize the armour (and casual appearance). The shuttle bay also has consoles for buying weapon upgrades and a workbench for adding mods to your weapons.

if you don't pick up an item while on a mission it'll appear later at the store terminal, also make sure to visit all the stores on the Citadel

Gotcha. Is the armor for appearance only or do they have stat bonuses on them?

I think I hit all the Citadel stores, at least the ones I have access to. I found the workbench in the shuttle bay for buying items, although Martinez (?) said it was always cheaper to buy them at the real store. Must have missed the armor customization terminal. I blame it on the crappy item targeting.

Oh - here's another question. I downloaded the "From Ashes" DLC but I haven't gotten the mission yet. Is there a certain point in the game you must complete before it becomes available? I was hoping after the Turian mission, but no dice.
