Marvel/Netflix Daredevil Season 1

Cons:
--He doesn't become Dardevil until THE LAST TEN MINUTES???
--He doesn't get the awesome looking costume until THE LAST TEN MINUTES???
--The black costume was... bad.
--The Kingpin never wears a white suit ONCE???
--Was it just me or did they repeat the same couple of canned scores every single time?
--The entire thing just looked cheap to me. Like they had no money.
--They never showed what his radar sense looks like.
--The episodes just felt unnecessarily slow and drawn-out. I think that's an artifact from being on Netflix with these 55 minute running times. There's no lines they have to color within.
--Somebody's been watching Arrow too much. Everyone, especially Kingpin, are constantly talking about "this city" and what it needs and deserves and how they're going to save it. Waaaaaaaay too overused.
--Stick only appears in a single episode? He only fights a single Hand ninja, and they never even get name dropped? The Hand brings in some mysterious potentially powered kid who promptly gets killed before we see him do anything?
--After making such a big deal of placing this in the MCU, they certainly pretended it wasn't aside from a fleeting mention to the Chitauri invasion of NYC and a couple Avengers jokes.

I just finished watching it. I liked it, I did, but yeah I'd agree with all the above points.
Especially the cheap thing. Hmm, I mean I don't think it looked "cheap"... but yeah I feel like they could have done with more money. And more NY shooting too, just felt it was Any Old Place USA for the most part.

I liked the first and last batch of episodes, but I'm not gonna lie I did start getting bored during a few of the middle ones. Scrolling through Twitter & Instagram isn't a good sign you're really into an episode. And especially as has been mentioned they're quite dragged out, and also it became obvious early on he wasn't gonna become Daredevil till the last five minutes.

Oh and Foggy, sorry but I couldn't stand him. The actor came of as so unnatural in the part. Part of me was praying Fisk would crush his annoying head.

But that's me focusing on the bad parts. Overall maybe 6 or 7 out of 10 from me.

*whispers* (I preferred the movie)
*ducks*

Also quick question, the last part of This Trailer has Wesley making a jokey reference to Iron Man and Thor. Was that actually in an episode? I must have missed that part if so

Near the end, Ben has a framed frontpage of the Bulletin with a chitarri frigate crashed into New York on it.

It's the same universe.

There's no reason that they shouldn't talk about the Greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Except that it makes these adventures seem so very small.

All this was about acquiring/not acquiring a handful of title deeds and construction contracts for rebuilding a few city blocks.

In Thor Darkworld, they were trying to destroy/not destroy nine reams (Universes?).

And more NY shooting too, just felt it was Any Old Place USA for the most part.

Huh??? A hundred percent of it was shot in New York City, so how could there possibly be more? NYC is all over this production. From the street-level scenes to the rooftops with the water towers to the view out Fisk's windows to the long dialogue scenes with the Manhattan skyline and the river and the bridges in the background, this felt as much like a New York City production as any I've ever seen. There were buildings that I recognized and street-level locations that I'm pretty sure I've walked through, many of them actually in Hell's Kitchen/Clinton. There was nothing generic about this show from a location standpoint.

It was in an episode, yes. Somewhere in episode 3 or 4, I think.

Just finished it and this is my (brief) rundown.

Good:
-The majority of it is well shot, well balanced storytelling with the focus on both the heroes and the villains. In fact, there is an excellent use of parallelism in terms of the focus of the lives of Murdock and Fisk. We get both characters background, as well as the slow destruction of their individual world, and losses on each side.

-I found the relationship difficulties to be rather poignant and realistic in terms of everyone's fear of getting others hurt, but causing hurt anyway. A great reflection of real life in terms of the dynamics and consequences of relationships.

-The way it concluded was quite well done, in my opinion, including the changes to everyone's world. There are many great implications while not specifically stating what happened with everyone. I like the fact that

-The dark and gritty feel is some times a bit much but overall it is well handled and use to indicate the impact that each action can have.

-Death is not treated lightly, despite the fisticuffs. While existing in the MCU, there is definitely a feel that when a character dies, that person's life mattered and has an impact on everyone around them.

-Daredevil doesn't get his costume until the last episode. I know this is a controversial topic, but I like the fact that it takes time for Murdock to develop his practice, his perspective and limits as a crime fighter. The costume is more a visual representation of his developing more certainty in his identity.

-Thank you Marvel for actually using foreign languages.

The Bad:

-Some of the character deaths feel forced in as part of keeping audience interest. The threats are pretty well defined so I'm not sure why there is the overwhelming need to kill more people.

-I really did not get to in to Ben Urich's subplot and the focus seemed to increase towards the end of the season. Maybe if I knew more about the comics then it might have helped.

-Speaking of knowing about things, it would have been nice to to see more with the Japanese and Madame Gao. Gao is minor gripe, but I really feel that Nobu and the Japanese don't get much of a detailed explanation or development like the Russians or Leland. Gao is a mystery but I at least feel like there were better hints.

-There was not a lot of legal practice by anyone. Seriously, apparently Nelson and Murdock and Paige live on the good will of the people of Hell's Kitchen.

Overall, it was very enjoyable and engaging season. It felt apart of the MCU with making direct or overt references to the rest of the universe. It also felt very small but important, kind of like M*A*S*H. There was not always the need for every event to fit in to a bigger, grand, scheme. It focuses on the consequences of individual actions without it becoming huge, world altering, events.

Today I read "Daredevil: Born Again". This would make for a great second season of the show, particularly since it was very low budget and real world. He barely wears the damn costume in it or fight anybody and it's very Kingpin heavy. It would also allow for a prominent guest appearance by a major movie character in a very organic way.

Ben Urich said that she already did porn. He didn't use the actual words "you did porn" but he knew that she did something embarrassing that she was ashamed of in her past, which "might" not have been porn at all.

Ahhh, I thought the horribly embarrassing thing that she did in her past--the thing she's so ashamed of--was True Blood.

Actually, that was blood. But they had to change it. 80s censorship, y'know.

Looks Klingon to me. ;)

Her comment about her homeland being considerably farther than China... Anyone else understood that as extraterrestrial? I found it odd that she claimed to speak all languages, too. I would be really surprised if she turns out no more than a human criminal mastermind.

This actually was brought up up thread, but you were probably avoiding spoilers...

Finished!

I saw her use Tai Chi to lay out Daredevil. Not to mention that crack about knowing all languages. And the Word "Dragon" exploded in my head. Makluan dragons from Iron Man came to mind first, which is a distraction, since the TV show is not going to Connect to the movies so directly... Iron Fist gets his power from hugging it out with a dragon, and Iron Fist is all about focussing his Chi, and Tai Chi is about Chi... Although that remark as she ditched New York, that her home was much further away than China could have been a reference to K'un-lun... They also said that her heroin was too pure. Space Heroin? That's L Ron Hubbard which completely opens a different can of worms.

Definitely an alien, possibly a dragon?

You may be on to something.

I would very much suggest Jonathan Tucker (Boon from Justified) to play Bulleye in the second or third season. He was born for that part.

Perversely flattering. I haven't made up my mind about Netflix yet, but I don't think I'm going to go that route to get my Daredevil TV fix.
