Marvel has found their Hulk-sized replacement

While it hasn't been officially confirmed, Deadline Hollywood reports that actor Mark Ruffalo (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Zodiac, The Brothers Bloom) has been cast as Bruce Banner/The Hulk in Joss Whedon's The Avengers.

Marvel hasn't issued an official announcement but Marvel and executive Kevin Fiege worked hard this week to secure Ruffalo so they can present him on stage tomorrow alongside his new co-stars at the Marvel panel at Comic-Con in San Diego. Ruffalo will be joining director Joss Whedon and actors Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner (recently confirmed as Hawkeye) and presumably Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlet Johannson when Marvel presents Comic-Con with their panel for The Avengers.

Ruffalo replaces actor Edward Norton, who last month was fired after negotiations faltered between him, his agents and Marvel execs. Norton played Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk. Eric Bana played the character in the Ang Lee film.

I assume that it will be made official in the morning. Nothing against the man but he's no Ed Norton and if they make Hulk movies with him my interest was waned, especially if they go ahead and reboot the thing for the third time.

I don't have any problems with Ruffalo, he's a good actor. But I really wish everyone involved had checked their egos at the door--it doesn't matter which side was more responsible--so that Norton could have remained as Banner.

No offense, but perhaps you might have put a poll on this thread? We already had a huge thread on this very matter (complete with discussion of Ruffalo) up to just a day or so ago, so adding a poll would at least bring something new to the table. ;)

In theory Norton should have been fabulous. Tyler Durden was the Hulk. No doubt about it, So Ed has played Banner before well. But that movie although much better than the last attempt out of the gate, sucked. It sucked hard. You give an a-list actor g-list material and very bad things are going to happen.

Never heard of the guy. But then, I had little prior familiarity with Edward Norton.

Nothing against the man but he's no Ed Norton and if they make Hulk movies with him my interest was waned, especially if they go ahead and reboot the thing for the third time.

Given that they've already tied the Leterrier Hulk film into the rest of the Marvel movieverse (by having Tony Stark appear in the closing scene of TIH and having a reference to the events of TIH in IM2), this will surely be just a recast (like Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard) rather than a reboot.

I'm disappointed Norton won't be back but Ruffalo is a great choice. He was superb in Zodiac.

I'm a big fan of Mark Ruffalo so while it's a bit disappointing that Ed Norton isn't coming back I'm glad they have a god replacement.

I hate Mark Ruffalo. I just find him to be completely lacking in charisma so the fact that he continues to appear in movie after movie always irks me.

This time, Marvel has the perfect actor to play Bruce Banner. Mark Ruffalo's talent will boost The Avengers and future Hulk films.

And soccer will become really, truly awesomely popular in the U.S.

Ruffalo's a good actor, so I'm sure he'll be fine. I do find the idea of him as the Hulk a bit amusing, since his standard screen persona is mellow to the point of apathy.

Hmmm. This is like Chris Evans as Cap - it could be worse, so I'll try to be happy and open-minded about it.

Ruffalo is so much more the Doctor Strange type, tho. :wtf:

If Mark Ruffalo is more like Cyclops.... does that mean three minutes of screen time in The Avengers? :p

Count me among those dissapointed that Norton isn't back. I don't care whose ego(s) or paycheck is to blame but this is silly. Nothing against Ruffalo he's a decent enough actor and no doubt can pull off ecentric scientist but a third Bruce Banner in 8/9yrs.
This one move will not cause me to not see Avengers, just saying this is silly to replace Norton who did want to come back.

Forget 7-degrees of Kevin Bacon, soon we can play 7-degrees of Bruce Banner.
