Wolverine's tiny little shoes are going to need filled properly when it comes round to recasting the most popular heroes in Marvel history. However, reports have indicated that Marvel Studios is beginning to get pretty serious about the long-gestating X-Men reboot, and the next phase is about to begin. However, for those looking for some A-list starts to head to Westchester County, be warned: this will be a budget-conscious version of the X-Men.

"Jake’s an incredibly smart guy, and he’s an incredibly talented filmmaker," Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige said during a roundtable attended by Collider’s Steve Weintraub. "We had a great experience with him on Thunderbolts, and if you saw that movie, what he did with those character interactions—he also has his pulse on, shall we say, a younger demographic... because X-Men, as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie."

well to me in my opinion i think casting unknown young stars for the mcu x men movies is a good thing and why well because in a way its will jump start there careers

Why is that casting news "controversial?" The original X-Men were a mix of big names and relative unknowns. I think Hugh Jackman was in the latter category before playing Wolverine made him a star.

exactly

the 20th century fox x men trilogy movies had a few at the time medium level name celebs like the ones who played iceman pyro shadowcat and colossus

same with the x men new class movies where they had a couple at the time medium level name celebs like the ones who played beast havoc jubilee and cyclops

Colossus was not a celeb. X2 is his very first credit on imdb.

Jackman might have been the biggest unknown in the cast. I don't know about anything he did before X-Men. Which was probably a good thing. When people see him they only saw Wolverine and nothing else. Granted he has done other stuff since then but I think he will always be Wolverine for most people.

As for controversies. They only one I heard about was people thinking Jackman was to tall to play Wolverine. I think I might of heard a few comments about showing a Nazi concentration camp but not much else.

IIRC both Russell Crowe and Mel Gibson were offered the role of Wolverine before it went to Dougray Scott. Fate (and M:I2) intervened with the end result that it went to another Aussie, albeit a less famous one. I wonder if they had cast Russell or Mel if it would’ve ended up a bigger budget movie? Perhaps more so with Mel - Gladiator hadn’t yet cast Russell into the A-list when they were making X-Men.

If memory serves also, Singer purportedly met with Sarah Michelle Gellar for the role of Rogue, while I heard that Maria Bello was also shortlisted for the role of Jean Grey. Jim Cavaziel was another name I heard linked with Cyclops at the time: arguably a bit better known then than Marsden. But other than Gibson, they don’t really appear to have been trying to cast superstars, more so just good actors who were right for the role.

I bet if they made that movie today lots of people would complain about Rogue just being a teenager girl who really is more of a damsel in distress than action hero in the movie. I really liked the movie and I like how they didn't feel the need to stay perfect with the source material.

Rachel Leigh Cook was the first choice for Rogue, she admits it was a mistake turning it down.

Of course, Movie Rogue really is more like Kitty Pryde or Jubilee than Rogue.

Anyways, hiring younger unknowns to play the cast will be good because it means they don't have to pay a huge amount for the actors. One of the reasons Big movies have such ridiculous budgets is because the actors know full well they can get a ton of $$$ from the studio.

One of the reasons they were able to keep the budget on the new Dune movies (relatively) low was because the Director asked if the actors would be willing to take a pay cut because otherwise they may not be able to afford them. They all wanted to work with him and believed in the project so they said yes.

He had a memorable one-off role in the Australian police series "Blue Heelers."

I mean really, folks have short memories....they thought Chris Evans and RDJ would suck as Captain America and Iron Man as well.
Yup. Chris Evans just had the awful Fantastic 4 film, and RDJ was trying to salvage his career. Most I knew him from was US MARSHALS.

I was excited for the Captain America movie not the cast and didn't bother with Iron Man until Avengers was announced. Thor and Captain America were just enjoyable films.

Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis were the best parts of those Fantastic Four films so Evans' casting was good news in my book.

I actually thought Robert Downey Jr was inspired casting.

I had no idea who Chris Hemsworth was by name, but I had seen him in Star Trek.
