I'd heard of Anna Paquin - though hadn't seen any of her stuff, but for me Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Halle Berry and Famke Jannsen were the main ones I knew for the main cast.
Oh, that's right, I knew Famke Jannsen because of "The Perfect Mate."

...I don't think I've watched that episode since X-Men came out.

I knew of Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, (Oscar winner!) Anna Paquin, Halle Berry, Famke Jannsen (who I remembered from Star Trek, but who made the biggest impression on me in GoldenEye), Rebecca Romijn and Ray Park. I actually remember recall thinking that it was a pretty strong cast when it was announced.

Next Gen, Goldeneye, Faculty, House on Haunted Hill, Deep Rising for me :D - Looking at IMDB, it's possible I saw less of McKellan before X-Men than I had of her, though I certainly knew his name.
Patrick Stewart the most separate roles - and definitely the most hours of.

My best college friend and I wanted Stewart to play Professor X back in the late '80s or early '90s, long before he was cast. And we weren't the only ones. Star Trek novelist Diane Duane wrote the 1998 novel X-Men: Empire's End, and you can tell she wrote Xavier's dialogue with Stewart in mind (e.g. he utters a Picardian "Grand" at one point).

Didn't the X-Men/TNG crossover novel written by Michael Jan Friedman have the X-Men noting on the resemblance between Xavier and Picard two years before Stewart was even cast in the role?

Hmm, yeah, turns out that also came out in 1998. Somehow I thought it was later.

Wikipedia says Stewart was approached to play the role in 1997, but I'm not sure when it was first announced. And books that came out in '98 would've presumably been written no later than '97.

I think it goes back earlier than that.
I have the Marvel's mini-series from 1993-1994 illustrated by Alex Ross and Xavier is drawn in the likeness of Patrick Stewart; although in a couple of instances, he looks like Yul Brenner.

I forgot she was in GoldenEye but I can't remember when I first saw it and whether it was before X-Men.

^ If I recall correctly, Yul Brenner was John Byrne's template as well.
Yul Brynner was Jack Kirby's template when he first designed the character, according to Stan Lee.
Interesting, I never heard that before.

Hey, Anna Paquin was an Oscar winner too. And Halle Berry was soon to be an Oscar winner. X-Men actually had a fairly well known cast at the time, just not actors who were big box office draws on their own.
