That is one hell of cast. I have to admit, I'd been expecting Cate Blanchett to be The Enchantress, so I'm surprised she's Hela. I don't really know anything about that character. Isn't she Loki's daughter or something in the comics?
Is this the first we've heard about Jeff Goldblum? I don't remember hearing about him, and I'm a big fan, so I doubt I would have missed an announcement about him being cast.
I remember seeing a comment from someone in the industry who said the stores had a lot to do with it -- that there were Rey figures made for The Force Awakens, but the retailers didn't order very many because they didn't expect to sell many. And then they sold out almost immediately and it became clear there was a massive demand that wasn't being met. The toy manufacturers recognized the need for the figures, but the retailers didn't.

So yeah, it's more about expectations and assumptions within the industry than it is about the actual interests of the consumers.
The Wal-Mart I work at got a whole bunch of Rey figures in with the first batch of TFA Toys, but I haven't seen anymore since then. They were some of the first ones to go, so there obviously is interest in Rey figures in my area.

Thor: Ragnarok has added some big names. Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster and Karl Urban as Skurge. We also have confirmation on who Cate Blanchett and Tessa Thompson are playing.

Interesting stuff. I think Cate Blanchett's casting was great, and Karl Urban is cool. I like Goldblum, but hope he doesn't make Grandmaster too "Goldblumish", if you know what I mean. I've never heard of Tessa Thompson, and she's not someone I would have cast as Valkyrie (not because of her ethnicity, but because she's 5'4 which, even with film tricks, is a bit small for a character like Valkyrie), but I'm sure she'll be at least ok. Marvel very rarely casts badly. This really looks like it could be the best of the Thor films.

I was already intrigued by this film but the inclusion of Jeff Goldblum just made this a must-see. So good to see him join the Marvel Cinematic Universe! :D

She is in Norse Mythology (well, Hel is), but I don't know about the comics.

I just looked up the comics version on Wikipedia and it does say she is Loki's daughter, and apparently the comics version is usually called Hela, while the mythological version is Hel. I wonder why the movie decided to go with Hel rather than Hela?

Interesting. I know nothing about the Grandmaster, so I'm curious about that.

Skurge but no Amora? I hope they have a contract to get him back in a Thor 4.

Yeah, the Enchantress has been a pretty major adversary in most Thor-related cartoons in recent years, so I assume she's a pretty big deal in the comics too. It's weird that she hasn't shown up in the movies.

Wow. Grandmaster? Interesting. Goldblum is going to play a great enigmatic weirdo. The Executioner, but not with the Enchantress?

Pretty sweet news all around. And they're even doing that crazy headdress! (Would it kill them to have Thor wearing his helmet once in a blue moon...?)

Interesting. I know nothing about the Grandmaster, so I'm curious about that.

He's an Elder of the Universe, so an Infinity Gem connection is likely.

Well, not for nothing, but the press release also confirms that Tessa Thompson is playing Valkyrie. And if my memory isn't completely failing me, one of that characters' early appearances was actually as a disguise for Amora. Which they presumably wouldn't want to just spoil in the casting sheets, if they decide to go that route. So we could have a little bit of a Mandarin situation on our hands, where the character isn't who/what we think at first.

Well Loki introduced the idea of changing appearances

We could have a situation in this movie too.

As for Portman. She lost interest right after the first movie and just slept walked to a paycheck.

Nothing wrong with Portman. She's just not interested anymore

Every time one of the characters says Grandmaster, I'm going to be the tiniest bit disappointed that they don't add Flash. :(

Edit:

So there's a May 2016 LootCrate review, with a diagram of the Infinity Gauntlet. But the Stones are all mostly the wrong colour.

Where they different in the comics to the movies?

Yeah, they were. For one thing, they were called Infinity Gems instead of Infinity Stones. I don't know what their colors were, though.

(Someone may have already brought this up, as I didn't read through all 90+ pages of the thread.)

Does anyone else suspect that in the MCU there may be some historical connection between the repeating Convergence phenomenon from Thor: The Dark World and the roots of the Ten Rings organization from the Iron Man films? I've been re-watching all the movies and series since seeing Civil War, and noticing that their logo resembles the worlds coming together. And could this possibly tie in to the Infinity Stones in some way as well? I don't recall there ever being any link between them and the Mandarin's rings in the comics, but they seem similar enough concepts that there might be fertile ground there for drawing one through adaptation. Just musing, here.
