I'd say the brand is Iron Man/Tony Stark just as the brand is Batman/Bruce Wayne. .movie goers aren't interested in seeing Jim Rhodes and Dick Grayson in those costumes outside of a one off with Bruce and Tony returning in the end.

Off the time of my head - Jim Rhodes was Iron Man for maybe twelve issues in a fifty (right?) year period.
If those 12 issues were all of the original Secret Wars then yes. Rhodey was Iron Man during that. It's been so long since I read it I can't recall if that was the case but since it took place off Earth it stands to reason Rhodey was IM for that whole event at minimum.

But we know Rhodey donned the IM armor several other various times. If not cause Tony was incapacitated than to wear the armor to throw off anyone making accusations that Tony was IM, have both seen in public at the same time.

The ends of IM3 and AoU seem to be setting up the end of Tony Stark's time as Iron Man, whether it will be the end of Iron Man the Avenger and superhero remains to be seen. It definitely seems to me based on what we've seen lately that once RDJr stops playing Tony it'll be the end of his Iron Man. I could see someone else taking up the armor and maybe even Tony playing non-hero role, but I doubt we'll see Tony Stark as Iron Man in this continuity once RDJr is done.

The ends of IM3... seem to be setting up the end of Tony Stark's time as Iron Man,

Whereas I interpreted it has Stark coming to believe that even without the armor he's still Ironman, hence the movie where he doesn't have it for a decent chunk of it, still saves the day, and gives a monologue to that effect, and more importantly starts Age of Ultron back in the suit.

The only thing supporting the retirement idea which would have come completely out of left field, is him blowing up some largely defective Ironman suits.

Well, RDJ/Tony Stark could show up in cameos as a consultant or in a similair position like Erik Selvig at the Avengers facility, designing new stuff for whatever Avengers are active...

Personally, I'm OK with a recast. Even though the MCU is doing continuity harder than those before them, a recast is doable and has been done.

I think it's possible that they could incorporate elements of Adam Warlock into this version of the Vision. The cocoon is just an easter egg.

I think it's clear his movie story has some similarities to Warlock. Are they enough to say the characters were combined a la Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash? Probably not. But I don't think it's enough to say that the movies consider them the same character.

And it's probably a stretch to assume they plan to use Vision to fill Adam Warlock's role in Infinity War, which seems to be what most people mean when they ask that question. It's entirely possible they'll decide the characters are too similar now and not include Adam Warlock. But it's entirely different to assume Vision is now Adam Warlock.

I'm not sure, but I think I remember them saying that the cocoon was more than just an easter egg.

So the list of apperances in Captain America: Civil War keeps getting bigger.

Link.

“Captain America: Civil War” is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Community”) from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (“Captain America: The Winter Solider,” Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”). The film returns Chris Evans (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron”) as the iconic Super Hero character Steve Rogers/Captain America along with Robert Downey Jr. (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “Iron Man 3”) as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Sebastian Stan (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: The First Avenger”) as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Paul Bettany (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Iron Man 3”) as The Vision, Jeremy Renner (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “The Avengers”) as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Don Cheadle (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Iron Man 3”) as Jim Rhodes/War Machine and Elizabeth Olsen (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Godzilla”) as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man After his debut in Marvel’s “Ant-Man” on July 17, 2015, Paul Rudd (“Ant-Man,” ”Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues”) will make his first appearance alongside the Avengers as Scott Lang/Ant-Man in “Captain America: Civil War.” The film also includes outstanding additional cast, including Chadwick Boseman (“42,” “Get on Up”) as T’Challa/Black Panther, Emily VanCamp (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Revenge”) as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, Daniel Brühl (“Inglourious Basterds,” “Bourne Ultimatum”)(unknown character), Frank Grillo (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Warrior”) as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones. William Hurt (“A History of Violence,” Marvel’s “The Incredible Hulk”) as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, and Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”) (unknown character)

^At this point they may as well rename it "Captain America: We Got Everyone Except Hulk & Thor!"

Mark Ruffalo said last week that he has a role in the movie. So yeah, the only person missing is Thor. Honestly will Captain America have a storyline in the movie? This seems like Avenges 2.5 and not a Captain America movie.

And people said BvS was crowded. Supes only has to share the screen with 4 other people to varying degrees.

That's news to me. Do you have a link?

Uh, I suppose I should change my initial post. There is no confirmation, only this post he made on his tumblr, that could be interpreted to suggest he has a role.

With as crowded as the film is, I wouldn't be surprised if they squeezed him in. Also, with Gen Ross back in the fray, I wouldn't be surprised if we got Red Hulk in a future Marvel film.

^The link I posted suggests that. Also, they don't really need Hulk to tell Red Hulk's story. Other than the fact that Greeny is in the wind post AoU, people are already familiar with him thanks to the Avengers movie.

I'd be surprised if a few of the returning character had more than a scene or two in the movie.

Yeah I think it's worth keeping in mind that in AoU, Warmachine and Falcon only showed up at the party and again right near the end. The latter only had one line of dialogue and wasn't even part of the battle. I could easily see something similar happening here.

It also gets a lot more feasible when you consider that this isn't about one massive group of people fighting an enemy, it's about a massive group essentially split in two and set against each other. I suspect the focus will be mostly on Cap's faction, so the core cast here will be Rogers, Romanov, Wilson, Carter and Bucky.
