Mark Gatiss to play the 3rd Doctor at Christmas?

I have no problem with The Doctor meeting Tolkien, but, like Professor Zoom, I don't like the idea of an adventure with The Doctor being the inspiration for his books.

And I feel like that's the only narrative reason to do a story with Tolkien in WWI.

It feels like a big bag of cliche.

I'm not a fan of Gatiss being related to Lethbridge-Stewart, it's a little to cozy. But it's better than Tolkien.

Actually we have a third candidate for Gatiss's character, who has a similar appearance, with the moustache- Gilbert Mackenzie-Trench, the guy who designed the TARDIS style Police Box, and who was a Lieutenant in WW1.... He too would fit the Radio Times description of " having a resonance through all of Doctor Who". Though given that they deleted my comment about Tolkien (with a picture) I still suspect he might be most likely.

Well, that trailer does have Gatiss, supposedly in character, commenting upon the notion of police boxes with admiration. I rather like that theory! I hope it proves true.

With a bit of embarrassment, I thought the term "McKenzie Trench" in relation to the iconic box referred to two separate individuals who contributed to the famous design.

Oh, that sounds much more appealing and makes sense as a tie-in to The First Doctor.

That said, the Radio Times did delete my comment about the similarity to Tolkien, but didn't delete any other speculations, including Mackenzie-Trench, so...

Would a character reveal like that be something the Radio Times would know? Telling the person running the website so they could delete, wouldn't it basically get out faster?

Can I just ask how does Tolkien "echo" throughout Doctor Who, exactly? I've never heard of the Tolkien-Who connection ever before, is it actually a long, pre-existing one?

Gandalf regenerates halfway through LOTR....

But Mackenze-Trench also has his work in every episode... And may that's why they've gone to the extent of having the two different TARDIS exteriors this time...

To be honest, Mackenzie-Trench feels more like something Moffat would do, while Tolkien seems more of an RTD trope. And though Moffat has channeled his inner RTD a few times over the past year, with this special being Moffat's last episode, I think we're more likely to get something pure-bred Moffat. Therefore, I am siding with the Mackenzie-Trench theory.
