Mario Kart Wii

Well, I preordered my Mario Kart Wii today. I cannot wait to be able to pick it up. My wife is actually excited about this one so I also bought an extra wheel so she can play as well. Mario Kart DS is the most played game on my DS and I predict that the Wii version will be highly played as well.

Are you playing with the pretend wheel or the GC controls?

I tried both and the steeringwiil works better...
You wil see a lot of familiar courses, about half of them are remade version of all the other incarnations, from nes to gamecube as well as the handheld versions...

I'd totally buy a Wii just for Mario Kart. It is quite possibly my favorite game!

In fact, I had been looking to buy a Wii for a while now. Couldn't find one. Gave up and bought an XBox 360. Then, last week, I saw a few Wii's in Target. I didn't buy one - why the frak didn't I buy one?!

Okay i'm getting a few conflicting reports. Some say the wii wheel with Mario Kart is sold separate then today I went and bought the 10 dollar wii wheel.

I told the game stop employee "I'm getting ready for Mario Kart" he told me it does come with it's own pointing to the flyer on the counter. I just said "hmm well i'll just be getting a second one then"

It comes with a wheel, but they do sell them separately too, so that you can have them for other players.

Yep. I bought Mario Kart (which includes one wheel) and got a second wheel so that I can play with my girlfriend :D.

I'm really disappointed that Baby Park isn't one of the classic levels. I love how chaotic it is with 8 karts, I can't even imagine how crazy it would be with 12 karts.

I'm also a little disappointed we didn't get the Yoshi level from the N64 version (the one with multiple narrow paths) and a Rainbow Road from one of the previous versions.

Other then that the classic track list looks pretty good.

^ I love Baby Park! As you say, it's chaos with 8 karts and it'd bring the house down with 12 :D

I know that rType is also a vocal Baby Park fan.

I've been playing Mario Kart Wii a bit more now and I have to say my initial excitement has come down substantially as I've been playing more. Unfortunately, this has started reminding me more and more of Mario Kart 64 especially in the races.

What bothers me most is this: The outcome of the races has little to do with how good you actually are but whether you're fortunate enough NOT to be hit by a bomardment of blue and red shells in the final lap. And since the blue shells can reach you no matter where you are leaving your opponents behind has absolutely no meaning. Similar to Mario Kart 64, it all comes down to the final lap which is just annoying to me.

I also think that, in general, there are too many 'events' taking place during races. I.e. there's way too much lightning, POWs, ink squirts, and shells. I find it quite disrupting for the actual racing which - so far - I found to be far more fun in the original where you had the odd bolt of lightning (making it a special event and actually valuable) as well as a reasonable amount of shells, bananas and stars.

I also think it's a real shame that you can't pick the number of players for the competitions (e.g. battle mode). The AI isn't particularly good (at least that's my impression), and it can be frustrating driving around the rather large arenas at times seeing that your team is just losing and losing and there's nothing you can do about it.

Let me say I REALLY want to like this game. I simply bought it when I saw it in the store. I'm going to keep on playing, and I hope that I'll find the races in particular to be less arbitrary in their outcome than I do now.

Wait, I just have to ask one silly question - Mario Kart Wii still has battle mode, right? Where you can play against someone else and pop their balloons?

Cuz that's very important!

^
It does, yes. There's also some classic courses to play. Overall, I think there's something like 8 arenas.

The main difference compared to the original is that it's not one on one anymore but two team facing off with 6 or so players each. AI players fill in if there's not enough human players.

My kids are really excited for this.. I haven't played Mario Kart for a while, but i'm really looking forward to the Wii version..

Though, honestly, I'm looking forward to Lego Indiana Jones even more!!

Ooohhh...so tempted to buy a Wii just for this game. And for "Endless Ocean". But I'm mad for Mario Kart! Is Yoshi still the best character to use?

Rubber-banding (the game artificially forcing races to be close) has been a problem since Mario Kart 64, though it got really noticeable in Double Dash!! and became absolutely obscene in Mario Kart DS. From everything I've read about the game, I can definitely appreciate Nintendo removing snaking from the game (which, likewise, was obscene in Mario Kart DS), but it sounds like the rubber-banding

Just makes me all the more pissed-off that when our apartment was burglarized a few years ago, the sons of bitches stole my Super NES along with all my games, including a Super Mario Kart cartridge that had been home to several top record times that were published in Nintendo Power in the early 1990s.

The Mario Kart series has always had rubber-banding, even on the Super NES. I don't know if they used it on every track, but the fifth track of the Grand Prix always had it.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about the burglary. That's really annoying. I hope you still felt well where you were living since I know something like this can change that.

Indeed, the original had rubber-banding in the sense that the opponents were slower when you were behind and lots faster when you were in the lead. You were also far more likely to get a star or lightning, for example, when you were behind.
However, with some practice you were able to leave the opponents behind. Building a lead actually had a meaning though it was harder on some courses than on others.

Fuck off. :p

I would've liked to have seen Wario Stadium or that Yoshi-themed track with multiple paths from the N64 game included in the classic selection. The Skyscraper and Big Donut battle maps too.

I almost forgot about Waluigi's Pinball level from the DS version. I can't believe that it didn't make the cut, it's easily one of the best levels in the DS version.

I had a Wii, for a year. In that time I probably played it three or four times properly. Don't get me wrong, it's a great console and lots of fun, but I simply never had time to use it and also in my mind it's more of a party type console, or you at least need a friend who's also into games. My partner hates games so by myself it wasn't really that exciting, so i sold it on ebay (and basically got what i paid. They really hold their value!). I don't miss it at all.
