It is for people like me who grew up playing the game on Nintendo and Super Nintendo but hasn't played since. I'm sure there are plenty of people like me.I mean, I don't know if its nostalgia if the character is still one of the most popular video game characters in the world. Its not like Mario was a flash in the pan, he's probably the most iconic video game character of all time, and his games are still system sellers. Not that the film won't have nostalgic elements, the promotional material has definitely brought older stuff in, but I think the movie will be successful because the character has remained extremely popular worldwide for decades, not because a trailer used the song with the 90s live action Mario show.
My mom likes Mario and still plays older versions of the game. Mario is huge across multiple generations. People underestimate the appeal and how appealing this character can be.It is for people like me who grew up playing the game on Nintendo and Super Nintendo but hasn't played since. I just watched it with my kids. I grew up with the original NES, so I suppose I had a connection to Mario. I honestly wasn't impressed. I thought the whole thing was flashy and dumb. My kids all loved it, so maybe I am just too old to enjoy it? I really enjoyed Puss in Boots a few months back, so it isn't that I don't enjoy animated fare. I just thought it was ... well, kinda stupid and corporate.
