Mario Bros. Animated Movie Coming from Illumination

I wonder if they'll end up referencing the second game which is kind of an oddball.
That's where the Shyguys first appeared, so at least one reference. It's an oddball for the American release as it was actually a modified Japanese game called "Doki Panic" I believe. Here's a video discussing the history of the game:

I've never understood why they predominantly voice Mario with a stereotype mock Italian accent. As I thought he was suppose to be an Italian-American plumber/handyperson from New York. So he should have a New York accent. Not an Italian one.

Hence why I've always thought the late Lou Albano, who was Italian-American and lived in New York for a lot of his life, was the perfect Mario. He had both the voice and the look of an Italian-American plumber/handyperson from New York.

Apparently casting directors loved Charles Martinet's ad-libbed audition using the stereotypical Italian accent, which he based on the prompt "Italian plumber from Brooklyn."

Yep, I realize that. It's what makes it quite interesting because the setting of the game, and its game mechanics are quite different from the rest. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any of the others have portable doors ;) I just wondered if maybe the movie will visit that world.

I would love to see the dream world again.

Yeah, I could maybe see a dream sequence where he realizes what a strange world it is while telling himself not to panic.

I'm loving what I'm seeing. A fully immersive world filled with nostalgia for all generations. I don't even care about the plot. It looks like a lot of fun to experience.

I'm probably not going to see it just because it doesn't look like the sort of movie designed to appeal to 39 year olds, but as somebody who grew up in the 90s, I'm glad kids are finally getting a REAL Mario movie.

The voice is growing on me. A lot more Captain Lou (albeit younger/less raspy) than Martinet or any of the other game/cartoon voices over the years. And as StruggleNation noted, you do not want to be listening to any of those voices emoting for two hours.

Other than the Ratchet & Clank movie, very few of these kind of movies use the exact same voices as the original games, so I'm not sure why it's an issue. I am a little surprised they didn't have Chris Pratt and Charlie Day do Italian accents, but it's a make or break thing for me. I've been pretty happy with what I've heard from the whole cast so far.

I want a dark and bleak Sponge fanfilm counterpoint to this. If you know, you know.
