Mario Bros. Animated Movie Coming from Illumination

I've seen the movie with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. Frankly, I thought it was an embarrassment and killed any future interest I may have harbored for Super Mario Bros.

A pretty good trailer. The animation is gorgeous, and Bowser/Toad sound great. Mario, like others have said, is literally just Chris Pratt with a very vague New York accent, which sucks, but studios just don't hire many real voice actors for major films any more, so if the rest of the cast is at least decent I can put up with Pratt.

Mario's voice has gone through some changes over the years:

I've never understood why they predominantly voice Mario with a stereotype mock Italian accent. As I thought he was suppose to be an Italian-American plumber/handyperson from New York. So he should have a New York accent. Not an Italian one.

Hence why I've always thought the late Lou Albano, who was Italian-American and lived in New York for a lot of his life, was the perfect Mario. He had both the voice and the look of an Italian-American plumber/handyperson from New York.

This...looks surprisingly good.

It helps that it does not follow the footsteps of Sonic and many others by doing the gods awful fish out of water in our real world live-action film that has been such a common trend. Instead, this film looks like its firmly embracing its weird silliness and all for the better.

You do realize that this film is going to be completely different from that film, right?

I recall reading that Nintendo basically gave the directors of the earlier film free reign for many elements, because they assumed (perhaps mistakenly) that Mario was already well established enough that any deviations would be mostly minor. Oops...

Should not do that.

Yeah, I'd always thought they were Italian-Americans immigrants from NY, trying to make a living as plumbers.

Not really feeling Bowser's voice. Why get Jack Black to try and sound like Clancy Brown when you could have just gotten Clancy Brown?

Looks like it might be pretty good, though. I do love the choice of Charlie Day for Luigi.

Damn, that looks like fun. I don't have a ton of experience with Mario Bros. but I know enough to pick up on most of the references. The cart driving part really surprised me, did not expect to see that.

Looks really promising. It feels more or less like the animated show from the 90's, but in 3D. But I agree, Bowser's voice feels a little off. Dunno why, but I'd expect it to be much deeper than how it sounds in the trailer.

They seem to be making lots of references to the games. I can count Super Mario Brothers 3, Galaxies, Mario Kart. I wonder if they'll end up referencing the second game which is kind of an oddball. But at the same time, I hope it won't be too meta to the point that it can still be enjoyed without the references.
