OK, I'm going to do a development process for something I've worked on before -- 2 different ways of making a four-nacelle configuration using circular struts... longtimers may recall that I've actually posted versions of both these designs before, but it'll be fun to redo them again. The era is TNG I believe.

Here are the first 3D "sketches":

Well, I must admit, the one on the left does not do much for me. Hopefully the one on the right is the "further development" sketch.

good to see she's back :)

the first one on the top left is the original right? I think you probably prefer that one?, but the struts look a little to flimsy, the the nacelles protruding out of the saucer a bit roughly for the overall smoothness of the ship... but then you have done allot with texturing so far, so its hard to really say.. but I think the nacelles need to look sturdier, especially if your making them mostly tubes with glowing plasma/energy/ect. like you did that time, which was neat, but I always felt that it would take much at all fo weapons to blow that up....booom! lol, but then I suppose with the weapons of Trek, once the shields are down, it's pretty much over anyway....:guffaw:

and the one on the bottom left, whats up with that? it looks like the naccel is goin through the bride o.0 or is the bridge somewhare else in that concept? I suppose its the anle, the saucer looks like its a direct side view but it's a saucer so..... yeah, but the nacelles are obviously going in another direction... so visual illusion?

I am rather fond of the ships one the right, like a hybrid ship with a ring and standard nacelles..... and you could still throw in the ods on it, are they torpedo pods? cause if they are, the plasma feeds for the nacells would get in the way, especially if the cross one another as it would look to the eye, if they don't not that much of a problem but you'd have more room putting the pods above and below the top and bottom naccelles respectively...

always interesting though :techman:

ty very much!

...and yes, that version of the "clipper ship" is a little spindly as is. The dA link shows it in a more-plausible way. And as you note, those glowing ones in my old version were kind of a commentary on fact that w/o shields the whole thing folds up like bad origami anyway, so I figured do what looks cool. And in those days I had no idea how make textures so glowing blue was a lot easier ... these will be more standard. :D

that's just a trick of perspective from the angle I picked I guess, both views are the same model in each case.

Yes, my heart is in the left-hand one but in the spirit of the contest I don't think it's the one the suits would choose... it's the pet idea the designer slips into the list in the off chance that it gets picked but doesn't expect it to. That's why I'm going to pursue the more-conventional right-hand version.

And I was also thinking about retaining the pods in the right-hand configuration... I envision them as mission-specific and swappable, mainly between a weapons array and a sensor pod [like the Nebula class]...

lol, well, yeah glowing things look cool :)

hmm sounds good, for the pods.... you know theres no reason why you can't eventially do both.... :techman:

I've been meaning to ask you, on some of your ships, where the captains yacht is (or maybe it was the bridge area), I remember seeing the circular area as blue, like the glowing stuff, is that where the warp core is? or is it something else as I think I remember you saying it used alien tech?

Yeah, it was meant to match the struts -- and blue's my favorite color lol. This one will be Trek colors of course.
:D
