Maps for GPS units are way to darn expensive

^I hear that! I'm in the same boat, but am cheap and haven't upgraded yet. Roads don't change all that much in a year.

Down here roads change quite a bit. Not so much in the North east though. Still I haven't updated maps in 2 years and have yet to have a problem with out of date maps.

Verizon offers A GPS thingy via the phone....reading this map update need makes me think that going with the GPS on the phone is a better bet than a stand alone unit.

That's it? Just a few years ago they used to be hundreds of dollars.

Most people don't need to update yearly anyway unless they do a ton of driving or need it for work. I've only been to one place in the 4 years I've had one that didn't show up on mine (a new subdivision built in 2007 or so).

read an article a little while back that the inclusion of GPS on various mobiles is making a very noticable dent in the sale of standalone GPS units.

I use Tom Tom Navigator software for the GPS on my phone and have had to update it a couple of times over the years, though I think the last time was over two years ago. To be honest, not a terrible amount changes, but last time round it was worth it for some of the new roundabouts, the incorporation of the M4 toll bypass and the better treatment of the London congestion charge.

To be honest, I think they're pretty fairly priced given each has a lifespan of several or more years.

Thus why I love my Blackberry and Sprint's Navigation software. It comes included with my data plan, has test-to-speech, traffic warnings and since it's always connected, free and automatic updates. :techman:

I am glad I saw this. It confirmed what I thought. I was going to buy a stand alone GPS unit but I knew there was a catch so I didn't. The price alone was too much. It is cheaper to simply add it to your phone then update a map and having another device to worry about. Besides Google Maps and the radio is free.

Downside is that phone AGPS only works if you have a phone signal... if you're traveling in areas with no coverage they won't work. I'm sure they're eating into the sales of standalone GPS's, but I don't imagine the market for them will be disappearing anytime soon.
