Manolo Blahniks!

Goddamn, those are expensive shoes!

"We are on the flirting edge of nowhere with 10 miles to go, and I am wearing my Blahniks. Do you know how many people had to die for me to get these?"

"No."

"Five. Five people had to. And that would makes these special even if they weren't Blahniks."

I almost bought myself a pair of Marc Jacobs heels a couple of years ago- originally $500, marked down to $75! I should have bought them...they were beautiful...

Oh you should have. That's one of those times that regret is a total bummer

Yeah, I do kind of regret it. But I don't wear high heels that often (really, I'm 5'8 as it is!).

Speaking of overpriced (but completely amazing and fun to look at) fashion- designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead in his home. It's just breaking on CNN and Sky. :( Looks like a suicide.

Sad news. :(

He was Savile Row trained, so was able to combine some truly outre ideas with beautifully precise tailoring know-how.

Let's cheer up the thread with some shoe soft porn from various makers...

From Louboutin, the Anemone, probably the prettiest & sexiest shoe with a bow ever:

Cute yet naughty, two-tone Chanels (the 3 on the bottom-left are my faves):

Prada Florals - a totally visually-arresting quirky design:

Oooooooh, yummy! Thanks for the eye candy, Holdfast. The ones with the thicker heels would be more comfortable, but the pair at bottom left with near-stiletto heels are my favorites. Comfort is overrated, after all...

Except that those Louboutins are too much even for me. I'd need to train in ballet toe-shoes to walk even 10 feet in those.

But the Prada are, of course, to die for. Those are the sort of thing K'Ehleyr was talking about - the perfect "twiddle your ankle showing off the rest of your sexy leg" shoe.

They're not quite as vertiginous as the photo suggests (the angle foreshortens them slightly), but they're definitely true high stilettos. Scary skyscraper stuff! :D

Just what I like to see...

OK, a quick homage to Alexander McQueen, may he rest in peace.

First, something sexy, daring, yet wearable (with the right outfit):

And now, something decidedly out there and unwearable, but still deliciously cleverly designed. These have something of Geiger's disturbing imagery in them:

I adore spectator mary janes! these are gawjus! (Do they qualify as Spectators if they lack the perforation trim? hmmmm.)

^ I think so, but maybe I am not as well versed in shoeosity as I think I am.

Those last two are...well, interesting, Holdfast. Honestly, doesn't the one on the right look like it's been assimilated by the Borg?

My god, those last two are hideous.

Yes, I'd agree. Grotesque, I'd say (hence the Geiger comparison). They're not really meant to be attractive. More an expression of some of the themes being explored, in a visually stimulating way. An example of Couture attempting to be Art, rather than just Fashion. It might not succeed, but those shoes are definitely not being designed with the intent of being pretty things on the end of someone's legs!

I'd say so. Lack of broguing shouldn't disqualify them from that classification. But two-tone bypasses the linguistic problem completely. ;)

Tongue-in-cheek, I would actually have more issues with the whole "mary jane" classification, since the original Mary Janes had low heels. In order to get around that, they're often called Mary Jane Pumps, but again, being really strict, a pump (or "court shoe" to use the British English term I'm more familiar with) by definition shouldn't have a strap across it, so that doesn't really work either...

Oh well, they say the best affairs involve someone whose name you never learn... can that apply to shoes?

Pump = court shoe? Really? That's one of those things I've always wondered, and no I am not kidding. (But you know that.) I've read the term "court shoe" many times (e.g., Agatha Christie's One, Two, Buckle My Shoe - really), but never when I had access to Google.

Yeah, really.

Believe me, the first time I heard "pumps" on a US TV programme, I was like "what's that?"

Figured out it was a type of shoe from the context, but it took a good long while to translate it across fully!

I had a similar problem the first time I encountered men's dress shoes being called "pumps." I don't know if they still are - not anywhere around here, I'm pretty sure - but they apparently used to be in the UK and probably elsewhere. I can specifically remember a couple of British books referring to men's "dancing pumps."

You can, perhaps, imagine what picture that created in my mind. Yes, it involved chiffon, of course...

Oooooo i want those flower Pradas:drool::drool::drool:
I wish i hadnt seen those now:sigh:
Must do the euromillions lottery tonight:D

Oh, my God. I could never wear those Louboutins even when I could still wear heels! The Pradas, though...hmmm, maybe they'll turn up at the Neiman Marcus outlet. :D

Well, the term "opera pumps" is still used as the term for the kind of patent leather low-heel pumps that men can opt to wear with black tie (and should wear with white tie). They sometimes come with a grosgrain ribbon bow attached to the front of the shoe. No chiffon though. Unless they're really fabulous.

Good luck. I demand a cut should you win, for tempting you into entering. :p

They're from 2007, from memory. So I suppose they might still turn up at Last Call, though I'd guess the odds are low this far out from when they were made.

There is no way I would be able to stand up in those shoes, let alone take a step, without breaking something.

Do I regret that? No.

I'm liking my Keen's from REI right now. Verrrrrry comfortable.
