Man Seeking Woman

30 minute sitcom about Jay Baruchel dealing with the aftermath of a love affair dissolving badly. The conceit in this series is that how the hero feels, or believes that he is being treated, is what is reflected as the reality of the sitcom.

Let me give you an example.

Remember that time when your exgirlfireld started dating a real asshole, like the worst person in the world, and you know that you're better than him, and it's all wrong but only you can see what a mistake that she is making, that God as you witness, you have to be better than that dick, and better for her than that ####ing ####!?

In Man seeking Woman, Jay's exgirlfriend begins dating Adolf Hitler. I mean sure everyone admits that he has kind of a sketchy past, but that was a long time ago and if you actually talk to him, you'll find out that he's not such a bad guy after all. Everyone deserves a second chance, and despite the age difference, they do kinda look cute together.



Oh, and Eric André plays the Quagmiresque sleezy best friend.

That kid is going places.

Not one but two mentions of Carnivàle in the first five minutes... this show is daring me not to like it.

Felt a lot like a twenty-something version of Louie.

Will give this a chance to see if it gets appropriately deeper as it chugs along.

I didn't want to like this show, but it won me over. Maybe because the pilot had the same director as Portlandia, a show I dearly love.

Second ep was really charming - and during the Emergency Crisis Center sequence, it sounded exactly as though they'd looped in the Enterprise-D ambient engine noise.

Okay, the endless rejection letters sequence from the start of the latest ep almost brought back some unpleasant memories...

Also glad to read the show's been renewed for S2! It's not high art or anything, but I dig the low-key surreality. Maybe with shows like Portlandia and Broad City around, it's not exactly unique, but I haven't seen either of those yet, so it's unique to my viewing at least...

I was unsure about this show at first, but it's really funny. I really liked the Traib episode with Michael Hogan. "It's been fifteen seconds since Josh sent his text." It's a really imaginative show that almost reminds me of a visualization of a comedian doing stand up.

That was a great scene, and I thought he was purposely doing Ty too.

Overall I think the show is hit and miss. The scene with the priest where he burns all her stuff was clever but way too long. The commercial his sister does ("Did you just shit yourself?") was hilarious.

I'll keep going for a while, see how it develops.

That was certainly a very sci-fi finale this week, a la A Sound of Thunder. I was impressed when I realized that the timeline wouldn't be formally reset, VOY-style, though I assume it'll be a soft-reset, with few to no future references to Trackanon (Hail Trackanon!). And then last week's ep was pretty good, too, actually becoming Woman Seeking Man during the title sequence.

I quite enjoyed the season, but hope that the next one(s) fleshes out Josh's character a bit more concretely, and introduces some more recurring characters. Having Mike be his only friend worked for the first season, but we're going to need more details on him as a person if the show is to grow beyond a short collection of weird skits. (That said, the married lower-school girls bit was pretty awesome.)
