Well, he didn't do it intentionally. The nail gun recoiled after its last shot and hit him in the head, which the sensor recognized as a flat surface and triggered the next nail to fire. He just thought he had been whacked in the head by the gun, and didn't even realize a nail had fired until he saw the x-ray.

Yeah, sounds like it was basically a freak accident -- more the result of dumb luck and clumsiness than stupidity.

You have to wonder about the description of the incident, though. I mean, how could the thing recoil and then turn around 180 degrees to shoot a nail into his skull?

When a nail gun is using a contact trip, it's very easy to fire a second nail directly on top of the first if you don't bounce the gun off the nail and on to the next spot. So, I imagine he fired a second nail directly into the first one, which caused the gun to recoil back into his head.

It doesn't say in the article, but he also could have been underneath it firing upward.
