Will you all stop inputing your opinions? This guy just wants signatures for a petition. We don't want to hear about you, nor your 'I don't think this will work' attitude. Stop trying to flame him.
I've been part of fan campaigns and I was even part of two of the very few that actually accomplished something. I don't post negative statements because it gets me off at night. I post them because I'm a realistic thinker just as often as I am a positive one. I'm not trying to flame him, I'm trying to inform him.
But you're right about harshness not accomplishing anything, so let me rephrase. It either isn't going to work, or it's going to require a strong combination of the following:
outside-the-box thinking that goes well beyond the realm of petitions and a fan trailer; tens of thousands of very vocal, very passionate supporters; a sizable chunk of luck.
The petition is me taking a chance and doing something for a franchise which I love to death. I understand that when people do these things maybe to bring back a series from cancellation or what have you that they usually do not work.
This petition however is to bring back something that is cherished by millions all over the world and that is Star Trek. Now granted that we have only seen the first part of what I have been assured is going to be a HUGE series.
Phoenix does something that the original two franchise runners should have done and that is go forward which is what Star Trek is all about and that is what Phoenix conveys. If done right, Star Trek could be back on Television and make the studio making it A LOT of money. Look what the new movie did for Paramount, It's time for Star Trek to come back to Television and I think showing Mr. Moonves that fans want it back even if not with this idea, it's there. Maybe the thing to make more people believe is the second part of the Pilot which is currently being scripted.
I don't know.
This petition is, as a whole pretty much, a chance to get the wheels turning that there should be a new Star Trek series on TV. This series and the movies can run parallel to each other. The Next Generation and TOS Cast ran side by side for a little bit, two movies I believe. It can work again I believe that if all this petition does is open eyes then that's more enough for me.
You said one thing that opened
my eyes, too, here. It's this little bit:
"It's time for Star Trek to come back to Television and I think showing Mr. Moonves that fans want it back even if not with this idea, it's there."
That tells me you may have what it takes to make more of an impact. Your dedication is not tied exclusively to your own ideas. You clearly want this for the franchise as a whole, which is important. It's warmed me up a bit to this thread, alongside the radiant
di_mar's gift of the
diplomatic silver tongue up there.
Let me give you some pointers. First of all, it's important to keep a very level head, here. Les Moonves has, in the past, displayed zero desire to pursue science fiction programming while he's head honcho. Zilch. So bear that in mind. CBS has absolutely no interest in the genre right now past some more urban-myth and superhero-style things on the CW. Keep this all in mind, it's important. It's an uphill-battle-and-a-half waiting to happen for whoever chooses to boldly go there.
The petition itself is going to do virtually nothing. When I said I've seen them go into the 50,000 range and barely receive acknowledgment from their target audience, I mean it. It's not a bad idea, so I'm not suggesting you discard it. It's a supplementary approach of traditional importance.
I'm not going to leave you hanging without some suggestions on how to approach this, though. First of all, adapt the word 'campaign' into every sentence when you speak of it. Not literally, but... you know. Because that's what it is. It's a campaign. It's a shot-in-the-dark, one-in-a-billion exclamation. And campaign is a stronger word for that than petition. Feel free to use an even stronger word than campaign if you'd rather.
Adopt unconventional approaches. Don't just tell people about this thing, tell them about it at conventions. Don't just tell people at conventions about this thing, tell them via badges and pins and shirts you've recruited creative and artistic types to develop for you. This is going to cost some money, but it's going to spread the word like no fan trailer can. It's going to attract attention from people who never would have clicked your link and they're going to see your level of dedication and go home and click that link. This is Save Campaigning 101, and it's applicable here, too.
Get everyone who sees this bright future with you to dedicate signatures, quotes and blog space to your cause. Don't ask too terribly much of folks at first or they'll shy away, but if you see someone dedicated, request that they make themselves heard at the slightest reference to fan efforts concerning the franchise. And don't ask people to get overly loud about it in more intrusive ways, because that attracts negative light on the matter, and that's the last thing you need, of course.
Have fun.
