"Make it so" - kind of a peculiar thing to say?

I thought it was pretty cool. It always seemed like a biblical statement to me for some reason.
Rather like the repeated phrase every time the Pharaoh makes a decree in C.B. De Mille’s 1956 version of The Ten Commandments: “So let it be written; so let it be done.” Those Egyptians wrote down everything.

I like it. A lot of people have those sorts of catch phrases.

No kidding. I know I have particular "patters" I go into automatically in certain situations. Some are of my own invention, though occasionally I have been known to borrow from other sources. It's frightening how often one can find a use for "You must do what you think is right, of course..." :D

The writers didn't come up with it. They lifted (or borrowed) it from Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels. It was Jack Aubrey's catch phrase before it was Jen-Luc Picard's. But it was the past; they talked differently there. ;)

High five!

I love those novels! I completely forgot Lucky Jack said that!

I wonder if Jean-Luc isn't also a huge fan of those novels; maybe that's where he lifted it in-universe.

Eh, I liked it. He's their commander, & it's a command. A hell of a lot more civil compared to Jellico's "Get it done!"

At least it's not overly dramatic, like "Administer it thusly"

Haha, I like administer it thusly. Good one!

I always liked make it so, too. Sounds classy and elegant, just like our Jean Luc.

. . . At least it's not overly dramatic, like "Administer it thusly"

Usage note: “thusly”

Apparently Picard wasn't the first to coin this phrase:
Cleopatra

Interesting.

As for the "make it so" subscription, there are only two parallels from antiquity, says van Minnen, citing one of Ptolemy X Alexander I, who signed a document "take care" in Greek in 99 B.C. and another such closing penned in Latin by the fifth-century Roman emperor Theodosius II in a petition to Appion, the bishop of Syene.

Makes one wonder if there was an ancient equivalent of “Take it easy” or “No problemo!”

Well the whole purpose of the movie was to be more Star Wars like.

The nabooian sounding hand weapons
Warp sounds like Hyperspace jumps
Big Monsters tend to roam the planets now and make pointless appearances
Dreadfully large super weapons
Even the plot holes are reminiscent of New Star Wars.

Yeah I can see the parallels there, but quite frankly the Phasers in Nu-Trek are the most realistic looking and sounding so far in the Franchise

Warp sounds like Hyperspace jumps
Again, yes theres a certain "Star Wars" feel to it, but in actual fact, A ship going FTL will not create cool streaks of light, rather it will very quickly cease to be in the same place, the jump and subsequent loud sonic boom is added for dramatic effect

Big Monsters tend to roam the planets now and make pointless appearances
Pointless appearance perhaps, but the way I see it, it was to show that non-humanoid races exist, besides we've seen similar creatures before, in the guise of the Vulcan Sehlat

Dreadfully large super weapons
If you are referring to the Narada, bear in mind its a ridiculously large Mining Ship thats been modified into a Battleship, if your referring to the Drill, well it least it had a plausible physical function, rather than taking the easy route and Phasering a hole into the core and why could they not just Phaser it? Maybe the residual Radiation interferes with the function of the "Red Matter" and would make it unsafe for the Narada and her crew

Even the plot holes are reminiscent of New Star Wars.

I'm not saying the film is perfect, after all it was Written, Produced and Directed by people completely new to the franchise (JJ Abrams even admitted he was more of a fan than a Trekkie and hadn't seen many episodes), but you have to admit its the most wide-audience appealing of the entire series, its brought more people to the franchise and quite frankly, apart from a few glitches, its captures everything that makes Trek, Trek...

Abrams didn't write it. He Directed it. But he didn't write it.

Star Trek was written by the guys who wrote Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Sorry I wasn't so clear, I did say the film was Written, Produced and Directed by people (not person) and I used JJ Abrams as an example, obviously you have people like Damon Lindelof, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman involved with the Story and Production too and each of them AFAIK, don't have much experience where Trek is concerned

I only recently realized how odd it is, I was so used to it from watching as a kid that I never really thought about it

I'm so sorry, I couldn't resist and I'm sure this has been done a thousand times before...

Make me crack up every time :D

Pretty sure Orci and Kurtzman were/are big fans of the show. Which is why they did the film. I forget the exact breakdown of the "Supreme Court", but it ranged from hardcore fans (Orci & Kurtzman?) to casual ones (JJ)
