MAJOR earthquake in New Zealand

StarMan is from Christchurch, although I think he now lives in Melbourne.
He's still in Christchurch (his most recent posts certainly indicate as much). He moved over here at one point, but he returned to NZ very shortly afterward. Hopefully he and his family and friends are okay.

I really have no words for this. It's just heartbreaking. :(

Hi.

Yes, still live in Christchurch. Currently holidaying in Surfers Paradise till next Wednesday.

Holidaying. Yeah. Went to Draculas last night as part of our prepaid package. Me and my mate left half way through it. This does not feel like a holiday anymore.

Loved ones are fine. Not easy getting thru to anyone at the moment.

What I'm seeing on sky news is absolutely gutting. I feel like I should be there. The loss of life and the scale of destruction will have an irrevocable impact on the city. This will define Christchurch. The Cathedral is gone - doesn't get more iconic than that.

From our contact with loved ones properties are fucked everywhere.

All too much. This will not be easy. Time for courage.

Take your time buddy, much of the city is being evacuated mainly because it's unliveable. If there isn't any reason to return other than to return, stay put. I would love to jump in the car and drive up to help but it's not feasible.

It's horrific. I wish there was some ability to predict earthquakes - apparently seismologists only found a 4% chance of an earthquake of this magnitude within a fortnight.

My mother left work early to make sure her sister, who lives in the area, was okay. Thankfully she checked in quickly, but it's the barest fraction of the panic those with missing loved ones would feel.

Glad you weren't in it. The damage we're seeing on TV is just incredible and rather depressing.

I was wondering how you were doing.

Does anyone know if the Australian woman, Anne Vos, has been rescued? She was trapped under a desk, barely able to move but was able to talk on her mobile phone. Her phone call was broadcasted by Channel Seven.

It was reported that she was rescued but now it seems that the woman rescued was Ann Bodkin not Anne Vos and that they are are not the same person.

Great to know you and yours are okay. As for anything else...as Candlelight said, while it's completely understandable that you want to go home and do something - anything - it might be best to leave it for a while. (Of course, it's pretty damned easy for me to say that.)

Best wishes to you and yours, and everyone else.

I am pleased to hear the good news. As I said there was confusing reports because two women called Anne were rescued from the same building today.

At least some people have been saved. Some little bits of happiness amid the destruction.

Good to know you and your family are all ok, Starman.
Hopefully you'll be able to reunite with them soon.

Already met up with some kiwis here and they've lost a mate. By international standards we aren't huge. I get the hideous feeling it will be the case if you haven't lost someone, you'll know someone that has. Thank you all - Good to see you still watching over us Bonnie. :-)

They've cleared a large area to prepare for the collapse of one of Christchurch's largest buildings.

The Australia rescue team arrived at christchurch airport to begin helping.

They were greeted with a round of applause and cheers from everyone in the terminal.

That's just awesome.

Apparently the 26 storey Grand Chancellor building, which is on the verge of collapse, has stabilised enough to allow rescue worker inside to search for survivors.

Good luck to them.

Another little bit of info Americans might of interest:

Christchurch is one of only five cities around the world to receive pieces of debris from the world trade centre in the form of a memorial.

The bridge that the memorial stands near had been badly damaged, but I believe the memorial itself still stands.
