MAJEL BARRETT-RODDENBERRY(Number One, Nurse Chapel) *Dies*

Wow Christine Chapel, Lwaxana Troi and the ship's computer all on the same day, how terribly sad. Majel you were the voice of a Federation and will be deeply missed.

This Christmas, a real angel already had her wings before the bell rings.

No need for the silhouettes, they're together again. Let's seem 'em that way.

RIP:(, thanks for all your hard work for Star Trek.

There'd better be a tribute card at the beginning or end of the new movie for her passing. B&B and UPN dropped the ball royally when DeForest Kelley died in the summer of 1999. Not one brief nod tacked onto a summer rerun or the fall premiere. Let's hope J.J. and his team are more observant.

Her memorial service was two days ago from what the websites were reporting.

Lets hope, it's the least they can do, her voice is in the movie as the computer so at least we get to hear her one last time.

Lukemia :(

I read the studio was against keeping a woman as XO when they decided to launch the series, even the comment by Pike in The Cage shows you have far we've come since then.
Despite sometimes disliking the TNG incarnation of her character I liked the DS9 one, and I'm watching most of TOS for the first time ever now so seeing her in her youth as well.
Three characters, the voice of the computer and wife of the creator she made a mark on the series she can be proud of.

Majel is always one of my five all-time favorite TREK actors, simply because of her versatility and how she broke barriers so early on.

The studio wasn't against a female XO, they were against casting Roddenberry's girlfriend in the part.

Discretion was never one of GR's strong points.

Fair enough, but let's face facts. How long would a strong female second-in-command have lasted in a Pike incarnation of TOS? Half the insecure male audience of America would have been bitching before the end of the first season.

:( RIP Majel. You were indeed "number one" in all our hearts.

Happy that we will get to hear the computer voice in the movie. Hoping for a dedication as well.

I once heard Gene say that some of the backlash against Number One came from female viewers of the time, who had a "Who does she think *she* is?" attitude (that was the exact phrase Gene used). I wonder how true this was.

I wouldn't be surprised if those "who does she think she is?" reactions were coming from the executives' wives who were also aware that Roddenberry had cast his mistress as the female lead.

If another actress had been cast, it'd be a fairer argument, but the obvious nepotism kinda taints the whole thing.

In TREK XII there should be a starship or science vessel named "USS Majel" or "USS Barrett" as a tribute to her.
