Yeah, that's been one issue that has come up in the fan base, particularly in light of the changes made to the combat system in the 2010 Core set. Some players feel that too much emphasis is being put on creature combat specifically and making a larger number of "gimmicky" cards that can end the battle quickly. They're worried that MTG might eventually go the way of Yu-Gi-Oh and no longer have the strategy elements that form the core of the game engine, or the flavor of building a deck that's more spells than creatures.
I was looking more in-depth at the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion, and I still feel pretty mixed about it. I do feel like it seems a lot less strategic than some of the older stuff.
