MadMan's Wallpaper Thread (Wide Image Warning)

Tweaked the poster some... I like this one a little better...

:)

OK, finally back. :) I've been laid up in the hospital with appendicitis.... No fun at all, and I've made no progress on modeling anything. :) I am feeling much better, though....

Anyway, I thought I would ease back into things, and tweak this image with some suggestions that were made about this image. I think they were all good suggestions, and this is the result...

I think this is more realistic... I'm going to try and stay in this "style" for a while, I think.

I've got in my head an image, of the enterprise, above earth, looking at it from the top down, flying over the starbase. :) That's going to be by next wallpaper image. :)

Great image, Madman and sorry to hear about the appendicitis! I'm glad you're feeling better now though. I hope you feel 100% soon. :)

OK this is fantastic! it is rightly going to be a touchstone image of ST for many years to come!

OK, I made something new!

This was cooking around in my head the last part of the week, and it was bothering me that I couldn't get it put down. :)

I tried to use some "Depth of Field" here, making the planet out of focus, and the starbase a little out of focus also... I hope the effect worked as I intended. I also tried to make the lighting look right... I was using a NASA image of the space shuttle for reference. :)

I would change the viewing angle of the station. Right now it looks like a VERY large surface installation. Still a great image though!

I LOVE the Saturn image, but the last version you did of it looks too dark... too much of the lower saucer's detail is wiped out... keep it a bit lighter... because even at that angle, there WOULD be light on it, as some of Saturn's rings are comprised of ice chunks, or icy rock... which light from the Sun and Saturn would reflect off of.

That kinda goes back to that whole "real image versus 'viewscreen image'" thing, I think.

I think that the "Saturn" image looks pretty darned good, personally... but the one thing that would make it better would be adding the "bounce" from the planet.

Basically, to do a "viewscreen image," you'd go with the same style MadMan has been using all along. But to do a "real image" you'd have to consider the light you'll really have out at Saturn... first off the intensity of the sunlight will be quite a bit less than you'll have at Earth's orbit (if you really wanna be accurate, you can figure that out easily enough!). But, of course, the "bounce" from the planet (and its various satellites, to a lesser extent) will be less as well.

Ideally, if this ship is being done with "self illumination" then the percentage of visible light contributed by the ship's sources should be increased... you should have a proportionately lower contribution of direct sunlight (white, perhaps with just the tiniest yellow tint)... with this one casting very sharp shadows. And, finally, another source, almost identical in intensity to the sunlight, coming from the planet (and colored much the same), but casting very soft shadows instead of sharp-edged ones.

Both of those would be relatively dim, compared to the ship's own self-illumination, of course, as I said before... so this would be a VERY interesting-looking render. :)
