Mad Max: Fury Road

98% on RT too. Superb numbers so far, I hope it translates into cash, as it sounds like a lot of craft has gone into this movie.

Seeing this tomorrow!

Definitely a movie I'll want to watch a second time on disc with subtitles turned on. Damn incomprehensible 'stralian gibberspeak!

It is funny how I went from "Really? Why?" to "I can't wait to see this!". I do have to wait though. Until Sunday.

I am really looking forward to it!

Saw last night.

Tulin summed it up better than I could. Just an intense, mesmerising trip into a visually stunning post apocalyptic realm. Never has the end of the world looked so gorgeous! Beautifully filmed. What a fucking ride!

The best action film I've seen in a long time -- and there's a lot of action here; apart from a brief bit in the middle, it's pretty much non-stop, and perfectly paced. This is the film Michael Bay has been failing to make his entire career (okay, Michael Bay would never try to make a feminist parable, but you get the idea; the connection is further called to mind by the presence of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who made her film debut ass-first in Bay's Transformers 3).

My only real criticism of is that whatever idea Miller started out with for a Mad Max film, in the final product it really feels like Max didn't need to be in it at all. Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa drives the plot, has the most/best characterization, and leaves Max himself feeling kind of superfluous (though omitting him would have required them to reconceptualize the brilliant action scenes, so perhaps it's justified on those grounds). Even Nicholas Hoult's character feels like he has more motivation/role in the story.

Not sure on the cameos but it was a "who's who" of Australian actors, as it should be. That was part of the fun, seeing actors from genteel soap operas playing deformed apocalypse survivors.

And Megan Gale as Valkyrie! She's from my home town and known primarily for being a beautiful model. She kicked ARSE and was AWESOME!!!!! Go Megs!!!!!!!!

P.S. Google her guys - she's a STUNNER!

I saw this today and I loved it so much I plan on seeing it again on Sunday. This is a world I want to revisit again and again (especially when it comes out on video). I hope to hell it does well enough for a sequel, as I feel Tom Hardy was so good in this he almost makes you forget Mel Gibson (almost) ;)

As to what CaptainCanada said:

Max may not be the driving force of the story, but his role in the film feels natural, and is very reminiscent of Max's involvement in 'Road Warrior' even though in that film he had more to gain because he wanted his payment of fuel. Max is a drifter, who get's involved in other people's struggles. This is true of first and second sequels as well (with the first film having Max motivated by revenge). So the fact that he's just kind of "there" is fine with me.

As for what Tulin said about iconic images in the film, the one that is still sticking with me is the Guitar Player who kept playing Heavy Metal riffs while fire was shooting out of his guitar. That's the kind of gonzo imagery I expect from a Mad Max film.

Seriously!

Another one was the blinded old guy, rags tied across his bleeding eyes, thundering forward to kill the heroes with pistols shooting into the blue-tinged night.

Images like that and the many others will resonate for decades and inspire the next generation of George Millers and Tarantinos!

Edited to add: And let's not forget the hellish nightmare inside the sand storm with cars and people being whipped into the air and exploding in flames. It was breath taking and, at times, more like art!

Excellent action film.

I agree that Max seemed a bit more along for the ride while Charlize seemed more "in charge" as far as driving the story and plot, but still...

A real quality action film. Loved that guitar player.

My only real beef with the film is that I wanted MORE nudity and gore.

I'm serious.

There were times that I felt they cut away from a scene just a bit too quickly.

I *highly* expect there to be an "unrated" version for video release.

The 'Mad Max' films have never really been gory. The first film is incredibly tame by today's standards, and 'Mad Max 2' has blood, but never overtly. And the third film is PG-13, nuff said. So I didn't have a problem with the lack of gore, a lot of the more surreal aspects (the "Milk Farm" all the grotesque characters) more than made up for the lack of it.

Also, I wanted to add: I absolutely loved that the movie didn't hold your hand. Near the beginning when Furiosa first deviates from the route and goes off road, at no point does the movie beat you over the head and tell you that she's escaping (or attempting to). Miller lets you figure that one out for yourself (though to be fair in this day and age with trailers everywhere, I'm pretty sure everyone knew the premise of the film ;) ).

I saw the movie last night. I really enjoyed it, even though I had another bad experience at the theater. Annoying couples chit chatting in the theater doing the "movie move" and an overall bad sound mix in the theater.

I can't wait to see it. Here's my question, I've only seen the first and some small parts of the third, will I be missing much?

Cool, thanks! I plan to go back and watch the other two but probably won't make it before Fury Road.

I'm liking what I'm hearing so far. But I'm also hearing that Max has a minimal role in it, so while I typically avoid reading too much about a movie, I'm kinda glad I did for this if the movie is really Furiosa's movie. That way I know what to expect going in. I may see it this weekend based on the positive buzz.

I saw it Thursday night. I wasn't expecting much going into it and found myself presently surprised. It was good if that genre is your type of poison.
