Watching MacGyver in reruns had me thinking: a solve -all do-all hero. Almost like...Indy?

So I posit to the Community...
Who would be a better problem solver?

Both always win.
Both always have a construed sense of capability

Mac always has some sort of technology at hand...
Indy has a whip

Both get dragged through the mud.

Both when asked say "I'm making this up as I go",

My Question: Who would you rather have on your side:

MacGyver or Jones?

I vote Indy

Whilst Indy does have certain qualities. I think I'd go for Mac, after all the ability to trun everday objects into useful devices might be more benefical.

^ Agreed. Plus, you can't beat that mullet or those snazzy 80s outfits.

Well considering MacGyver could solve any problem with his pocket knife and a stick of gum, and Indy basically just rushed in and hoped he got lucky, I'd probably go with MacGyver.

Well, Indy was good at finding lost archaeological treasures and fighting Nazis. MacGyver was also good at finding lost archaeological treasures and fighting (Neo-)Nazis, as well as outmaneuvering spies, preventing technological catastrophes, outwitting serial killers, battling greedy polluters, exposing supernatural frauds, helping inner-city kids, rescuing endangered wildlife, surviving in extreme conditions, and putting up with Jack Dalton and Penny Parker. Indy was a specialist; Mac was a free-ranging troubleshooter able to adapt to any situation. So basically one MacGyver is as useful as Indiana Jones plus Barney Collier plus Clarice Starling plus the Scooby-Doo gang plus the Crocodile Hunter plus the Mythbusters plus... you get the idea.

And guns? Feh. MacGyver's enemies had guns. Didn't help them much.

I had a feeling (hoped) you would weigh in!

Would MacGyver be as effective if in the same situation?

I posit that Indy could adapt, no matter what...
and MacGyver would adapt whatever...

Mac IMO couldn't match Indy.

Did Mac ever lose? I have to admit, Christopher, that I have not seen all Mac episodes, But (GASP) NAZI's!!!

Fun thinking about, and waiting for your next novel, Christopher! DTI, DTI Why wont they Die?
"It's damn Kirk's fault!"

;)

Who would you rather be... Indy or Mac?
Who would you rather be around, Indy or Mac?

Indy for one, Mac for the other. Most of Indy's associates don't live to the end of the movie, especially the ones that can't make up their mind which side they are on.

I don't want to be the guy who says "To the grand adventure, I go first Indy!"

Indy always goes first

A lot of people seem to die around Indy. True, most of them are the bad guys, but I have a suspicion I'd be safer with Mac. Plus, I'd learn a lot more practical stuff from Mac.

Same as what?

I'll say this -- there's no way Indy should've been able to survive travelling for days on the outside of a submarine without any diving equipment. That only happened because the script said so, and it makes no sense if you think about it. But tell me MacGyver did that, and I'd believe it. He'd figure out a way.

Mac IMO couldn't match Indy.

At what? Let's compare qualifications. First off, Indy specialized in one field, archaeology, while MacGyver was more of a polymath, with bachelor's degrees in physics and chemistry and evidently informal knowledge of a variety of other branches of science, engineering, ecology, computer science, and the like (and he was evidently pretty good at amateur archaeology, considering all the Indy-style relic-hunt episodes they did). There's also the fact that MacGyver has the advantage of four decades of scientific advancement over Indy; even if Indy had broadened his range of expertise by the 1980s and kept current with scientific and cultural progress, there's the little problem that he would've been in his 80s by that point and wouldn't exactly have been in shape for climbing mountains, punching out bad guys, and running from explosions.

Did Mac ever lose?

There were occasions where he failed to save the life of a friend, but he brought the bad guys responsible to justice. Although in one case he lost a dear friend to a mountain-climbing accident, so there was no one to hold accountable for it (though he blamed himself for a while).

I have to admit, Christopher, that I have not seen all Mac episodes, But (GASP) NAZI's!!!

Yes, in the episode "The Ten Percent Solution," he exposed a neo-Nazi movement that had infiltrated positions of power as part of a plan to create their own Aryan nation within the US.

Indy. I've only watched two episodes of MacGyver and didn't care for it. I've seen everything that Indy's ever been in and loved it. Who else was I going to choose?

Indy, easily.

It's because MacGyver can make anything out of bobby pins and a roll of toilet paper. Indy has nothing but the whip, the pistol and the fedora, but he fights off entire hordes of Nazis and Russians with them.
