Spoilers MacGYVER reboot review thread

I dunno about "fascinating," but she is pretty nice to look at.
She's both. To me anyway. She's a skilled computer expert, so she's got what it takes to be expanded into a full-on 21st century MacGyver.

By the way, the actress was in a couple of Supergirl episodes last season as Maxwell Lord's assistant.
Yeah, I found that out after the premiere last week. I don't remember her from Supergirl.

They could always bring him back as a different character.
They most likely will if the show lasts but honestly, I'm not that keen on seeing him since it's not a continuation. Shipp on The Flash and Hatch on BSG are good comparisons but I don't feel the same way about RDA here.

Old MacGyver had a daughter? refresh my memory please.
He didn't, not during the original series. I think the suggestion is that Riley is young enough that she could have been a daughter born sometime after the original series.
Right.

And if you want to count the 10-minute commercial below as canon, she would have been his other daughter.

And all I can say is, I’m not considering being a part of a project that has overlooked the insanely LOYAL FANS of the original character and has proceeded without considering how and why they all became and STAYED loyal fans…

Yes, I was asked, but no, I won’t be involved in the MacGyver reboot. I have tried to recognize that there really is a balance to be found here. Hence, my loyalty to my fans.

I dunno... I liked the line in the pilot where Mac said to Riley, "You hack computers, I hack everything else." Despite how TV tends to assume that any scientist or scholar is automatically an expert in everything at once, there's a pretty big difference between being a genius at coding and a genius at engineering or chemistry or whatever. That's one thing about the new premise that I think is a good idea -- keeping MacGyver as a specialist in building stuff, and teaming him up with a tech-support character to handle the computer stuff that's pretty much unavoidable in this day and age.

If I could rework this show, I'd dump the "Jack Dalton" character and have it just be Mac in the field and Riley backing him up from HQ or from a nearby van or whatever. He could keep up a comm dialogue with her that could take the place of the expository narration.

I just binge-rewatched season 1, and I found the actress familiar, but couldn't place her. So I looked her up and realized she was Riley.

Well, I don't plan to keep watching the show anyway. But a curmudgeon with a heart of gold like Harry would be such a perfect character for RDA as he is now.

Ah, well. So much for that idea.

I was thinking the same thing too. Or have him as a recurring character like in the original. The Patricia Thornton character would be the extra gun when needed.

Yeah, I'd keep Thornton, but I'd restore her predecessor's close friendship with MacGyver. And of course I'd much rather have the Phoenix Foundation be the philanthropic/scientific think tank that it was in the original, rather than just a cover for a spy agency.

Oh geez if he only appeared in one episode, probably why I never remembered at all.

It was in the series finale (not counting the "lost episode" they aired a month after the show ended).

Yeah that first episode. Wow that was not very good. It just finished about 10 minutes ago here.

Never mind we had the new episode of Hawaii Five O right after which turned into Mirror's Edge Hawaii part way through. But that was mildly tolerable. I don't think I'll be watching the next episode of Mac.

Last night episode's started off pretty good. The narration and the macgyverism were definitely giving me a more classic McGyver vibe. I really like the character moments between Dalton and McGyver like the talk in the cemetery. But then the episode went off the rails for me as the plot got more and more implausible with the make shift surgery and the fake death, especially with having the guy conscience and semi walking around just after the "surgery". I stopped watching when the team lose the body. I guess I should finish watching the episode but man, did it have A LOT of implausible stuff in it.

Farewell Mac. Thanks for the memories.

I'm also giving up on this new version.

After my initial try, I gave it another go this morning and "watched" all three. But it all basically became background noise while I did other stuff, and the parts I did actively watch weren't very good.

I wouldn't even mind the updated format if it just didn't feel so cookie-cutter familiar. And it was ... better.

From what I can see on RottenTomatoes and IMDB, the reception of this show has been overwhelmingly terrible, but the ratings are still solid... :vulcan:

"wire cutter" was a fun episode. The show has a good blend of charm, action and humor with some good character moments. And, the 2 russians were great. If you accept the show on its own merits and not compare it to the classic MacGyver, it's a very enjoyable show.

We just had the episode where they had to go to Veneuzella or something.. Was a bit predictable in parts. Still no patch on the original show. But it is almost passable if you have it on in the background I think.

I like Riley. She's nice to watch.

MacGyver given a full season.

How long before the Scorpion crossover episode?

Ugh!!!! no just no...

I actually sat through an episode of that when they were onboard this funky looking plane with delta wings, which was supposed to be a secret plane and it was a terrible episode.
