Lursa and B'etor

Their harebrained plots and shenanigans were growing way old by GEN, so that they met their fate was one of the better things about that movie.

The scene is a lot like the ST VI scene where Chang stares at the screen, and I think the ship blowing up is the same or else awfully close. Like Chang, I guess they were so self-assured that their plan would result in the destruction of the Enterprise that they never thought about an escape route.

Yeah it's the same footage of the Bird-of-Prey being blown up (though the coincidence in the staging of the scene, the torpedo heading slowly towards them and the Klingons watching on in horror, hadn't actually occurred to me before -- it was a lift from STVI in more ways than one! :D)

In both cases: Lursa and B'etor in Generations, and Chang in ST VI - I got the full impression that they knew they were going to die and were fully resigned to their fates.

Well, Chang had been defeated: the very fact that Kirk was going to live would collapse Chang's great plan of inciting a war, as evidently Chang was in the belief that Kirk would be listened to and Klingon and UFP duplicity revealed in the exact wrong manner at the exact wrong time, thus leading to self-recrimination and peace rather than accusations and war. Chang would win nothing by surviving.

In contrast, the Duras sisters had survived many a failed plot and had kept on trying; this was not their very last desperate scheme or anything. If they had to flee there and then, and managed to do so with their ship intact, they would apparently have a supply of trilithium (if not the secret of turning that into a starkiller bomb), plus whatever clever El-Aurian augmentations Soran had made to their ship. If they had to abandon ship, they could still try and survive, talking their way out of the mess just like they had talked themselves out of previous disasters with Picard.

OTOH, Chang had expected to win; the Duras sisters had been convinced they would die in the hopelessly biased fight against the giant Federation flagship. Would this mean Chang would be so taken by surprise that he wouldn't try and survive, while the Duras sisters would be so prepared for defeat that they had an escape plan well rehearsed? Or would it actually be vice versa?

Whatever our interpretation, it is certainly not unexpected for Klingons to choose to die in battle, even when survival options abound.

Pity thst B'etor died, I always had a soft spot for her ;) even if she was a little power crazed.

Ricardo Montalban was COOL!!!

As a direct result of the commentary in this thread, I did, indeed look into this whole Fake Chest business, as it relates to Ricardo and his appearance in STAR TREK II.

If I can be arsed with it, I will look up - and post - a photo of him in the Khan outfit where the necklace is unlatched and it's obviously his real chest. Unfortunately, the way his chest is presented, it's like we're meant to be staring at it in awe, like he's putting Arnold Schwarzenegger to shame, when in fact, there's no hype about it. So, between the needless attention drawn to it and the strategically placed necklace, it's bound to appear fake. Maybe if they'd painted scars across it, like he'd been wrestling tigers or something, it would've made him look more badassed ...

I was merely suggesting that fake scars would've at least offered a possible reason as to why we were looking at an old man's unimpressive chest, throughout this movie. As it was, there was none. Scars would've possibly suggested something about his character, hinting at his strength and willingness to do battle. As it is, it's just horrible fashion sense ...

Ricardo Montalban was playing the King in "The King and I" in San Francisco sometime in the 70s or early 80s. His chest was quite real.

I wished they had survived GEN, or maybe not been used at all. I liked the Duras sisters and wouldn't have minded seeing them more in DS9. They could've had a lot of fun scheming during the Dominion War.

I could have easily seen them turning out to be spies for the Dominion.
