Luckinbill: Nimoy Wanted Another Role In Star Trek V

TrekToday

If things had gone his way, Leonard Nimoy would have had two roles in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Luckinbill played the older Vulcan half-brother of Spock who was on the hunt for Sha Ka Ree and God. It was said that Sean Connery was up for the role of Sybok, but Luckinbill got [...]

Shades of Spiner in Nemesis? First time I've ever heard that story.

I'm glad LN didn't pull double roles. The 'long-lost brother' thing was implausible enough without him being Spock's identical twin.

A report based on "scuttlebut"?

And as a news reporter, I can see this writeup does its best to bury its point... about Nimoy wanting to play both characters. It doesn't come out and say it, probably because it can't. It's fudged; it muddles it and leaves the entire point way down buried in a long quote.

I'd need/want to see something a little more strongly stated before I'd believe this.

...Twin Spock's would have made ST V both more implausible, but likely, in the end, more enjoyable. Luckinbill is a bit of a ham, acting wise. Double Nimoy might have saved a narrow bit of how bleh the film was.

I don't know whether Nimoy's acting in V is the result of any bitterness of not getting Sybok, but he really didn't really do much for in the film; honestly at points he looks like he's on the verge of rolling his eyes and leaving the set to go cash his paycheck.

I think Luckinbill did fine, in fact he gave Sybok far more genuine presence and depth than the film deserved.

I really like Luckinbell in the role of Sybok as well. Not a great villain (was he really supposed to be?) but an intriguing character. It's an under-rated movie, a good story.

A double role for Nimoy? I've not heard that story before.

I find it interesting that this account claims that Connery was 'up for the role' of Sybok, but didn't get it as Luckinbill was the preferred choice. Other accounts suggest that the producers wanted Connery (and the name of the planet Sha Ka Ree is a deliberate play on 'Sean Connery'), but he was either unavailable or uninterested.

That would have been a fun gimmick.

But Final Frontier didn't need a gimmick, it needed at least one more re-write.

this would have been a bad idea. "long-lost identical twin half-brother" is even sillier and more soap opera-esque than "long-lost half-brother."

Also, Luckinbill's performance was fine and not at all the cause of the film's "issues."

Having a half brother that can also be a twin would make Vulcan biology really interesting, to boot.

Unavailable because he signed on for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, if I recall.

yeah that too.

When I read the story I assumed that Nimoy wouldn't be playing a twin brother but rather he'd wear makeup and prosthetics to change his physical appearance enough that "Sybok" would look similar to Spock but not identical.

Was Connery to busy with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? since that film and ST5 came out in 1989.

^ I think more likely he just wasn't interested. Doesn't seem to be a big fan of sci-fi and fantasy in general. He turned down roles in The Matrix and Lord of The Rings because he just didn't get either. And, worse still, accepted the lead in LXG thinking that it was time he got into this whole fantasy scene...Oops!

Well, Sean Connery may not be a big fan of sci-fi and fantasy, but he did have a small role in the film "Time Bandits", he played King Agamemnon. It is a fantasy comedy film. He starred in the sci-fi film "Outland". Both films were released in 1981. He was also in the 1979 sci-fi film "Meteor".
