The hyphen implies that one parent was a Noonien and the other a Singh. Or maybe Khan's name was Noonien-Singh and they just didn't use the hyphen.

I only skimmed the first and the last few pages of this thread, but no, I don't personally think the SNW Kyle is the same guy we saw on TOS. But Kyle's a fairly common name.

Roddenberry probably wanted everyone on Trek to be polyamorous. He's one of the few TV producers I could imagine producing a porn parody of his own show.

Nothing bad to say about the character, but I was frustrated with the ridiculous number of call-back names. In one ship, 11 years before TOS, we've got:

Chapel
M'Benga
Kyle
Uhura
Kirk

If this is Pike era, I want to see Pike crew. Pike, Number One, Spock -- those make sense. But where's Jose Tyler? Where's Dr. Boyce? Where's any number of new characters they could have made up instead of inserting names that make no sense?

Then the one genuinely interesting and new character (Number One #2) is "Noonian-Singh"?!?

That kind of lazy fan-pandering (all of it, not just Noonian-Singh) makes the universe a very small place. I feel like by the end of the series, EVERY single character we know from TOS will somehow associated with the Enterprise a decade before TOS.

M'Benga
Kyle
Uhura
Kirk

If this is Pike era, I want to see Pike crew. Pike, Number One, Spock -- those make sense. But where's Jose Tyler? Where's Dr. Boyce? Where's any number of new characters they could have made up instead of inserting names that make no sense?

Then the one genuinely interesting and new character (Number One #2) is "Noonian-Singh"?!?

That kind of lazy fan-pandering (all of it, not just Noonian-Singh) makes the universe a very small place. I feel like by the end of the series, EVERY single character we know from TOS will somehow associated with the Enterprise a decade before TOS.

The upside is most of these characters, even Uhura are really not that filled out so in many ways they are just like new characters. As for Pike's crew the only one I miss is Boyce and after that it would be 2 from the comic books in Comm officer Nano and chief engineer Moves-With-Burning-Grace.

That' what fans want. A smaller universe, very interconnected, and more characters they are familiar with. It gives a sense of comfort, I feel like. Like a very small town feel, where everyone knows your name.

Boyce, Tyler, don't make the cut.

Oh, most definitely. Others have noted but it bears repeating: once SNW was being produced the questions would abound about where Kirk, Scotty, etc. are. So while I disagree with it they are getting out in front of predictable demands.

Fans sometimes don't know what they want until they see something great on a tv show and movie and realized they are seeing something they wanted all along but it didn't occur to them until actually seeing it.

I mean did anyone really think back in the day they wanted to see a tv show were the dad from Malcom in the Middle sells meth and becomes badass? The answer is most likely no until they watched the show.
