Lt. Joe Carey

OK seriously though, it could simply have been that the actor wasn't available. Remember that if they have to write 'Joe Carey' into a scene and the actor can't make it, the scene has to be rewritten.

I doubt that Josh Clark was too busy. According to IMDB, between 1995 (his last episode in Season 1) and 2001 (his character's death), he appeared as minor characters in a few tv shows and B movies:

  1. "The Invisible Man".... General Grimmond (1 episode, 2000)
... aka I-Man (USA: second season title)
    - Impetus (2000) TV episode .... General Grimmond
  2. "Crusade".... Kendarr (1 episode, 1999)
    - The Visitors from Down the Street (1999) TV episode .... Kendarr
  3. The Sender (1998) .... Barry Stoop
  4. "Babylon 5" .... Kulomani (1 episode, 1998)
... aka B5 (USA: promotional abbreviation)
    - Movements of Fire and Shadow (1998) TV episode .... Kulomani
  5. "Millennium" .... Edward Petey (1 episode, 1997)
    - Weeds (1997) TV episode .... Edward Petey
  6. Dark Breed (1996) .... Rice
  7. The Sweeper (1996) .... Wax

That really doesn't mean his schedule didn't conflict with Voy. filming schedule.

Just one of Voy. eps. takes a 14 hour day to film, that doesn't include reshoots. Then two or more weeks of post production before the ep. makes the air. He would have to be signed and on call in advance if he were to film any ep. of the show, no matter how small his part may be.

Not to mention they gave Carey a wife and kids at home, that now will never see him again. Vorik should count himself lucky he was forgotten about or he would likely would have been killed too.

It gets worse.

They like many already thought the Voyager crew to be dead, 4 years later Voyager makes contact w/ Earth.

"Hey Honey, I'm alive!!" The family rejoices!

Less than 3 years later: "Dear Mrs. Carey, we with deepest sympathy regret to inform you........"

That's what sucks.:(

And it may be even worse still. Was there a data stream between "Friendship One" and "Endgame" ?? I can't remember. If there wasn't, Voyager makes this triumphant return to Earth, with all the families ready to greet them, but Joe's family is taken to a back room at Starfleet HQ and told the news while everyone else is rejoicing in the background. Haha, then the family can blame future Janeway for not going back in time a month earlier, altho his death apparently resulted in a planet being saved....

^^He'd still get a medal of honor.

Still in Federation society if we don't believe in money, how does the family of a Starfleet Officer that has died in the line of duty get compensated?:vulcan:

I'll agree, its an odd one. Bringing someone back just to kill them. I mean, who gives a shit.

If they really wanted to kill someone off, it would have been far more interesting to bump off someone in the primary cast.

But that means TPTB would be wasting money, assuming every main character was contracted up to the end of the series/season. Unless you brought them back as a Rimmer-like hologram or something.

Plus, they already got rid of Kes and Neelix would be gone in a few more eps. as well.

It was a senseless death that I think could have been made less so if more than an episode had been spent on him and it. The problem was that it came from nowhere. We don't see him for a few years and suddenly: "BAM!"

You have to remember that by this point the producers (not the writers) were running on fumes. I bet one of them said, "Oh man! We have to kill off someone the people care about to make an emotional episode! Ratings gold!"
"Dude, that only means the regular cast."
"Shit! Open the files and see who you can dig up."

I disagree.

Ratings gold at the end of the finale season would be pointless. If you haven't held a steady audience for 6 years, the 7th and last year isn't going to matter.

^The reasoning may have been different but it was still a misplaced and badly executed attempt to reach out to veteran fans.

^^Lyndsey Ballard never appeared on VOY at all until her 'resurrection' in 'Ashes to Ashes'. That was just a lame episode for so many reasons, that being the main reason.

True.

Secondly, I doubt Harry would have been so homesick and missing Libby if it was true that he and Lyndsey had some type of relationship.

I also find it hard to believe that Harry couldn't hook up w/ any of the women Paris tried to set him up with but this Lyndsey Ballard comes out of the clear blue and has this unknown relationship with him.

When the hell did he even mourn her death?

There's an article in a Star Trek magazine. Apparently he was pissed off that they only called him back those first two times as a time gimmick. He genuinely wanted to be a recurring character.

Harry and Lindsay previously only had a friendship; apparently, among all the regrets and resentments Lindsay left behind, taking up with Harry was on her list, too. (She had a list; it kept her warm at night, thinking of all the things she would do after she escaped from the Kobali.)

Harry did love her when they were at the academy, but never acted on it (or even told her); and it never developed into anything. I don't see it as being in conflict with his relationship with Libby; in their episode together, he was already working for Star Fleet.

And by coincidence, "Friendship One" ran on Spike yesterday. The epilogue is dedicated to the memory of Joe, with Chakotay and Janeway visiting his cabin and remembering him through his Voyager ship in a bottle. It's a nice moment for the character.

Wouldn't Libby be jealous too, knowing Harry had feelings for another woman? I think that would be the conflict, right? That would make Libby the "booby prize", as in I can't have Lyndsey so I'll settle with for you.

Huey Lewis': "Happy to Be Stuck with You." makes so much more unflattering sense now.
