Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

This is Star Trek. Character growth isn't really a thing.

I hope they don't keep going forward one year a season. It kinda' wastes one of the main advantages of an animated show, and it'll have this comedy crew reacting to some heavy stuff in a few seasons...

Not really. If the show runs seven seasons (Big If, I don't know if any New Trek shows will go on that long), then Season 7 is set in 2386. Everything is before the Romulan Supernova, with the post-DS9 status quo presumably in place.

The only heavy thing we know coming up is the Attack on Mars and Synth Ban in Season 6. The show could set that season before or after that April, and play lip service to it slightly, but not necessarily. Maybe a brief mention during Season 7 would suffice, or they could just not bring it up.

The only real thing they should do, probably this season or next, is replace the First Contact/Titan grey uniforms we keep seeing with the Picard Flashback uniforms. Keep the Lower Deck uniforms, of course, but seeing the Flashback Unis on background characters would be a nice continuity nod to New Trek and not just the Berman Era.

A lot depends on what Prodigy is going to do with their uniform game.

That interview gives away the title to the next episode (An Embarrassment of Dooplers) which I haven't seen reported anywhere else. Looking online, I see a few people have mentioned Dooplers in relation to Lower Decks only (they are a new race, that will feature Richard Kind as a guest character), that just show that it was one of the review episodes for critics.

There's a picture also of the Dooplers that seem to imply a tribble-like infestation from these guys.

Should be called "The Doopler Effect". Harrumph.

The pic suggests he might be one dude whose species duplicate as a defence mechanism when embarrassed (they all look like they're cringing/blushing) and normally you wouldn't know which one you should be mad at so you drop it. But then BOTH of them keep messing up...

Richard Kind? Awesome!

Just got done discussing the latest episode on my podcast.

Critically speaking, I don't think this new season is as strong as the first so far. I can't get past the reset button being used twice in the last few batches of episodes; first on Boimler and then again on Shax. It hurt the show a little bit for me and makes me wonder why those things were even done in the first place if they weren't going to commit to them.

Are they not showing previews for upcoming episodes on P+, or am I not looking in the right place? Don't they usually just tack that sort of thing on the end of the episode?

I think the reset button is my only real issue with this season. We had a small taste with greatness in the first two episodes, a show that respected Boimler's exit and Shaxs' death. Jet would've been a good addition to the group. Kayshon a nice new bridge officer.

But they backtracked. I don't know if it was out of fear of audience drop-off or word on high or what, but the show lost something lately. Maybe they'll reclaim it, somehow. Maybe the reset button will be explained or crucial to the season finale.

They're doing a good job breaking up the pairings and trying out new things, but they could've done things differently. Boimler could've had his Tom Paris obsession on the Titan. Kayshon and Jet could've done Shaxs and Boimler's job in the Mugato episode.

Maybe there's something to the Enemy Within rumors, and Boimler will be restored to his rightful place at series end.

I can’t load it - says it can’t find a message from their sponsors so, of course, nobody’s allowed to see it. Can’t see the commercial because you can’t see the commercial inside the commercial.

So, yeah, why can’t we see previews in P+? Why must we wait until a couple days before for StarTrek.com to post (and have their streamer break because commercial-in-commercial)?? This seems like really bad planning on their part.

Glad to see Paramount/CBS/Viacom still maintains their high level of quality standards.

I think you described it pretty well. Something feels off this season and I think it's because of the backtracking. I'm not a fan of them using the reset button and feeling like it's ok to by turning it into a joke.

At first, I thought Boimler was going to be kept on the Titan all season and we'd go back and forth between him and the lower deckers. Maybe by the end of the season, after we're seeing Boimler get into all of these TNG-like situations (and demonstrating his inability to handle them), he might ask Riker to send him back to the Cerritos citing that he doesn't feel he's ready for this yet. Or something to that effect. Then it gives me a reason to root for him more.

Right now, I don't know where Boimler goes and that's affecting my viewing the show a little bit.

BUT THE SEASON ISN'T OVER YET. I can only describe how I'm feeling right this second. This could all change.
