Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

Seems to be. He has a love for the minutia but those darn people keep getting the way of how pretty everything looks.
Reminds me of monster movie fans sometimes. "This plot and these people are getting in the way! Me want big smashy fight!"
It's totally possible to like both. It's not even an actual problem. But to think those two sides of the same coin are irreconcilable is just...silly.

I don't think irreconcilable. I think it is a matter of what different fans emphasize. And if that minutia is the more important to some fans that is fine but still rather foreign to me because I prefer characters and their development to ensuring that the uniforms line up perfectly.

I can't. I just can't. I tried to watch clips and scenes of this show... I just can't. There's nothing interesting in there for me. I don't mind humour in Trek; I might even accept a comedy... but this just isn't working for me. The screechy comedy just doesn't land.
I mean, there's a difference between cuts of the episode and watching the whole thing in context.

Minutiae is important for me too, but if it gets in the way of my enjoyment, the latter is more important.
And often times, intentional or not, that is what I am seeing is that minutia getting in the way of enjoyment. At least to me. Maybe nitpicking minutiae is enjoyable to others than myself.

I mean to be fair, Voyager is probably the worst of the TNG era.

It's by far the worst of Trek, in my opinion, but it's his highest-rated. All other shows are rated lower by Bernd. In other words "slightly above 'meh'" is the best he can rate a Trek series! Think about that. How "fan" of the show is this guy?

But you can see the kind of "humour" and content. There are plenty of movies and series that I watched based on clips on Youtube and I usually get exactly what I expect. I don't think binge-watching this show would change my opinion of it. It's just not for me. Great for those who enjoy it.

Ohh I thought you were upset that he didn't rate Voyager higher.

I think that 5.33 is an average of all his episode scores, not his ranking of the series itself.

That is still pretty low though.

That's what I said. But regardless, that means that, on average, the best Trek series gets barely above a middling 5.

how dare he XD

How nice of you to cut out the part where I explain why. If you thought the best series in the franchise got an average of 5 out of 10, would you really enjoy said franchise?

Questioning anyone's own categorization as a fan is just plain old gatekeeping.
In my rankings, VOY is between TNG and DS9.

I'd have to agree with @NCC-73515 here, this reads like the very definition of gatekeeping to me. Dude could enjoy only two episodes of one of the shows and still call himself “fan” for all I care. I think it's hilarious to say someone who spent 25 years of their life maintaining one of the most well-known and long-running websites on a subject somehow isn't a fan who enjoys that subject.

And on the topic of how Voyager ranks among the TNG era shows: While I agree that it would probably come after Deep Space Nine and The Next Generation for me, I'd still have to say that I enjoy it very much. Maybe it's because I'm fresh off a rewatch of the whole show, but when the show was good, it was really good.

Bernd seems to enjoy the world of Trek if not the individual stories (shows), and more power to him. Star Trek offers a rich tapestry beyond the sixty minute or thirty minute adventures that have spawned an entire culture surrounding ships and systems, planets and races, and all sorts of cultural milieu and minutiae that any episode, I gather, could fail to take to its fullest extent.

You could be a fan of Star Trek, the idea, the concept, and dislike every episode, the execution and reveal of its contents. There's nothing whatsoever wrong with that proposition.

No, it isn't. Your accusation is disingenuous, as I've made it clear that a "fan" has to enjoy a particular works, and Bernd clearly doesn't.
It’s very much gatekeeping.

The man is a fan, his site is one of the best resources outside of memory alpha. Someone who isn’t a fan of the franchise wouldn’t dedicate the last 2 decades of their life to maintaining it.
