I don't know that she's a prodigy, but more someone that has spent pretty much her entire life exposed to Starfleet and the unknown. She's probably far more experienced than most people on the Cerritos.

I think she is a more interesting person that she lets on.

Lower Decks takes place in 2380 five years after the end of the Dominion War.
If Mariner entered into service as a cadet when she was 16 (Like Wesley and Nog did) and also assuming she is in her mid 20s now, well she is probably combat vet from the Dominion war.
Think about it.
Not only she has been in starships since she was in diapers, she has seen action. HARD action.
They could even make a joke of the medals in her record.
And she is dealing with fresh greenhorn Ensings RIGHT OFF the academy.
