The pictures and footage I've seen of Engineering quite simply suck.
I wouldn't say that of any other set, prop, design or effect I've seen from this movie...although there are others that I'm not totally fond of.

They did -- at the Anheuser-Busch plant on Victory Blvd. in Van Nuys.

Lets hope that with the sequel, we start the film seeing the engineering section having more sophisticated equipment/panels installed, and the pipes sealed within bulkheads and enclosures, bringing the sleekness of the new bridge, with the raw energy of engineering.
It doesn't look like a power plant because they didn't use a power plant for the set. There are no big engines in the location they used, just a lot of pipes and tanks.
I like that pic of the collidor though, they should use that next time if they don't want to build a set. Or just don't show engineering.

Hey, perhaps you know, since the Enterprise is brand spanking new, they just hadn't got around the putting the nice clean bulkheads up around engineering yet?

That's a good idea, though I imagine that such facilities are not as convenient or otherwise production-friendly as places like Amheuser-Busch (which has been used as a location for decades).
Yeah, from the quickie scene I caught online it's very odd. The aesthetic of engineering doesn't go with the rest of the ship at all. On an intellectual level I get why they had to do this for cost cutting and of course, the engine of any vehicle doesn't always match up with the rest of it, but 30+ years of seeing engine rooms that do match the rest of the ship has me emotionally biased against it.
Of course, this is perhaps, my biggest gripe with the movie, so relatively speaking, I think I'm good.

OTOH, as other folks have noted, having the decks all brightly carpeted in Engineering as the other Trek productions tend to makes almost as little sense as brick floors. 
Yeah, don't get me wrong. I am totally against a TNG style engineering (did they have a permanent steam machine hooked up in that warp core?). I don't think there is a good template for an engineering room in any of the movies or TV series. But the solution in this film left a lot to be desired.
