Love the movie, hate engineering

Not that original TOS engineering was anything special. It was rather drab, but this new engineering is a convoluted maze of pipes and looks out of place on the new ship. I understand that use of the Budweiser facility was a cost-saver. Perhaps the saved money made other effects and sets possible. If so, so be it. But I hope that Engineering is redesigned from the ground up if we are fortunate enough to have a sequel.

Hey, perhaps you know, since the Enterprise is brand spanking new, they just hadn't got around the putting the nice clean bulkheads up around engineering yet? :p

But wouldn't that make it more realistic that it's a maze and difficult to navigate ?

Does it look like it really could be the engineering deck of a Starship?

Well, I haven't watched the film yet (tomorrow! :scream:), but from what I've seen so far of engineering, I simply love it! I really think it adds realism, because it seems so big and untidy. And I don't mean that in way to suggest that it looks dirty. I just think all these pipes make it look very convoluted, chaotic and vast. Just how I imagine an engineering room of a starship from the future. And I love the color sheme! :techman:

Possibly... there are no long shots of it. There's no coherent design to engineering. I think that's what I dislike. There are catwalks. There are big metal barrels. There are pipes. I just think it lacks cohesion.

I've no problems with it. I don't know why some people hate it. maybe because it looks nothing like the original? perhaps, but it's fine with me. it LOOKS like an engineering section of a big starship.

^okay, now that you say it, yes. I actually loved the catwalk in the eng section in ENT. the episode by that name was good too.

Most ship engine rooms in reality lack a cohesion of interior design, function before form.

Actually I like it very much. It looks like the engineering decks of an huge ship, like a modern supercarrier or similar, just what I think it's right for something like the Enterprise. Not a couple of tidy medium-sized rooms with switches and lights, but a real power-producing facility.

Here's an image from the boiler room of an aircraft carrier.

I do love the industrial feel here.

I also appreciated the big industrial facility at alkali lake in X2.

If you're gonna go industrial, I say go full bore. The new Enterprise engineering just doesn't quite interest me yet.

Well, the "flight lounge" aesthetic of the previous ships always got me a bit confused - the bridge and other areas that people might see is all well and good, but engineering was always going to be full of coolant tubes and power plants and other stuff vital to the running of the ship but not really necessary for visitors to see. I always thought that was more... plausible.

^^ Which, at least, would make some sort of sense. As it is, brewmeisters are gonna love it :wtf:.

Well if they do decide to do a custom set for the engine room in the next movie... I could do without the customary clean-looking room with a glowing tube in the middle.
