Lost vs. Babylon 5

Well, I guess I'm a bit biased towards B5 because I have seen B5 in its entirety and only watched bits and pieces of Lost to date. It seems like a good show and I love arc-based storytelling so I'll probably enjoy it. I definitely would like to go back to S1 and watch Lost from the beginning so that I can better understand and appreciate what I've seen so far but I'm frankly more into Star Wars and space-based sci-fi, so I'm thinking that B5 will still come out on top in the end. My wife is a Lost fan and she has been collecting the season sets so I'll be able to go back and watch the series at my leisure.

I'm glad I don't have to choose. Both are exceptional series.

B5 gets the edge in arcing, while Lost gets the edge in characters.

Ooh, this is tough. Of course, Babylon 5 is actually finished and tells a complete story, so it's a little hard to compare to Lost. I've absolutely loved it so far, but for all we know, the ending could turn out to be total crap.

That said, I think I'm going to go with Lost, simply for its ability to keep you interested with shocking moments and crazy twists. Plus the acting is way better on Lost.

Lost definitely has the edge in humorous moments.

Jack: "How can you read?!"
Ben: "My mother taught me."

Hmmm, difficult to compare. I suppose it would be B5 because it's completed and I've had 10 years to reflect on the series overall.

LOST.

I never gave a damn about any of the characters or plots on B5. I wasn't emotionally invested in it at all. Hubby loved it but it just fell flat for me. But LOST? It's like a rollercoaster ride. I can't get enough of it.

The tv series LOST is a really long, drawn out, boring soap opera that copied other ancient boring shows like "Crash Island" ,
"Fantastic Journey", "The New People", "Lost Flight".
It's slightly scifi but mostly just a love triangle series that becomes totally incoherent with flash backs, flash forwards, more flash backs etc. If you want to know the plot of next season's Lost pick up a copy of the Honolulu and see what actor got themselves arrested. The plot and cast changes on any give season of LOST are dependent on which actor gets another DUI while driving around Hawaii because they are either bored out of their mind living on an island doing the show or bored out of their mind stuck on an island when JJ and his bunch aren't filming. So they go off get sh#tfaced drunk, get arrested and somehow JJ, Lieber and Damon Lindelof have to fit this mess into their next season of the tv show.

Babylon-5 simply put is one of the best tv shows of all time, it changed the face of scifi forever. The acting can be a bit wooden but it improves and you notice it less as the B-5 epic story becomes a full on rollercoaster.
It jumps the shark during the last season which ain't bad, it took a fifth season before people saw the story come apart. The concept was so strong that DS9 certainly did borrow a lot from it, maybe B-5 did borrow back but the point is B5 is still strong and still influential.
As opposed to Lost, where it jumps the shark after season one. Almost the same kind of trainwreck as "Alias", JJ should stick to movies. In my opinion he couldn't do a good tv show to save his life

and btw
I'm not one of these old school Babylon-5 fans. I completely missed the fun the first time around. It wasn't until DVDs came out and I got a player did I realize what an epic this B-5 show was.

Some of the sets and fx look a little dated, but the still hold and the story is as strong as it ever was
I recommend B-5 to anyone who enjoys real scifi

Not sure yet. Surely Lost has much better writing, acting, directing, cinematography, etc. Babylon 5 has a lot of heart thoug.

Are you serious?

Lost by a long shot. Never understood the appeal of B5.

The opposite is also pretty commonly felt. ;)

I hadn't noticed.

My vote goes to Lost. What it lacks in epic universe shattering-ness and kewl space battles, it makes up for everywhere else.

Course, I haven't seen the final season of either show, so things could change.

Love both shows, prefer Babylon 5.

And both aren't very comparable anyway. When I want epic space opera I watch B5, when I wan't mindf***s, twists, and puzzles within puzzles I take Lost.

Babylon 5, easily.

Though I never miss an episode of Lost (so I do like it), I can see where it spent too much time meandering when it should have been getting on with its story.

B5 made me care about the characters and the actors behind them. I was really disturbed when Andreas Katsulas died. And "Sleeping In Light" never fails to bring a tear to my eye, even after all these years. I can't see myself ever being that moved by the loss of anyone on Lost, on-screen or IRL.

Both are superb shows.

For various reasons, B5 is still ahead at this stage for me, though.

It's slightly scifi [...]

Between the smoke creatures, the ageless characters, the time travels, and a few other things that should go unmentioned (in case someone wants to actually watch the show and pay attention to what's going on), Lost is not "slightly" SF and hasn't been for quite some time.
