Again, Lost is Most Time-Shifted Show in US By Viewers And Percentage

For the second week in a row, Lost had both the largest time-shifted
audience and the highest % viewership gain from time-shifting of any
primetime broadcast network show. With 3.98 million time-shifted (DVR)
viewers, Lost had the largest absolute time-shifted audience for the
week of February 25 - March 2, followed by Tuesday’s American Idol
with 3.84 million time-shifted viewers. Rounding out the top 10 for
was Wednesday’s American Idol, Thursday’s American Idol, Survivor:
Micronesia, Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, Medium, Celebrity
Apprentice, Wednesday’s Big Brother and Law & Order.

Very good news. Some people have commented on the fact that Lost has lost viewers over the years but I think most of that is really accounted for due to time shifting. If these numbers were known a year or two ago then there'd be less people gloating (not really on this board but other places) that Lost has been losing viewers. Of course the number of time shifted viewers has probably gone up due to increased DVR useag over the last year or 2.

There are probably three times that many people that watch it online or illegally download it as well.

Still, the only thing that matters is the amount of people who are theoretically watching the commercials. If they're illegally downloading, for example, that doesn't matter.

Exactly. Heck, I have a PVR that let's me pause, fast forward and rewind live tv, so I always wait for the show to be on for 5-10minutes before I start watch it, then just fast forward through the commercials. So even though I am watching the show as it airs, i am still time-shifting it by about 10 minutes to avoid commercials.

Lost is probably the top seller at iTunes as well (I haven't seen a listing of the total number of downloads - does that info exist anywhere?) considering how long each week's episode lingers in the top 20 there. And at two bucks a pop that certainly does count! Probably a lot more than watching the ads on regular broadcast (I can't imagine that an advertiser would value that at anything like two dollars - most likely, it's pennies or fractions of pennies).

Studies show that around 40% of people who DVR shows watch the commercials. You'd think people wouldn't do that but some do.

Obviously... but I think the Nielsen system doesn't accurately depict anything anyway.

Not to mention all the people that just wait for the DVD to come out. I work in a video store, and LOST is one of the few tv shows that actually rents regularly.

^^^^
True. I do it with some shows. I have a friend and he and his wife have seen up to season 3 on DVD. They like to watch 4-5 episodes at a time and knock it out over a long Holiday 4-day weekend. I understand that, its the type of show best seen in quick succession.

I have actually taped the first 7 episodes of S4 and I asked him that now that the tape is full if he'd like to have it over the break. Nope, we can wait till Christmas there are other shows to keep them busy till then. Besides he says by then S5 will just be starting and we will be no more behind than anyone else.

I had a mental block on LOST ever since the first ads appeared — looked like it was simply a dramatic version of Survivor or, worse, Gilligan's Island.

At the beginning of March I saw that ABC was streaming all the episodes in HD, so I had a look at the pilot... and just kept going, at about 4-6 eps a day!
I was astounded by every aspect of the production: writing, acting (especially Terry O'Quinn's), cinematography, music... but the whole time I was thinking, "I would've hated this if I'd had to wait weeks and months between episodes!"
Took me about 3 weeks to get caught up to "Meet Kevin Johnson" — and then found out I had 5 weeks to wait for the next one!

Maybe I'll just wait 'til the show ends, then binge-watch the rest.

Y'know... When I read the thread title, I thought this was gonna be a thread about how it's still 2004.

People always seem to forget that, even putting these numbers aside, the show has never been anything but a bonafide hit ratings-wise. The show has never even had average ratings, let alone poor ones. These numbers just help support that. The only people who say otherwise just don't like the show and want it to fail.
