Act 1 opens with the plane crash and ends with Penny receiving news from her scientists that they may have found the location of the island, which is our first glimpse of life outside of the world in present day.
Act 2 opens with an in-depth look into the Others' world. The midpoint of Act 2 is the flash-forward and the ending of Act 2 features the reveal of Locke being the one in the coffin and Ben telling Jack that he and the rest of the Oceanic Six needs to return to the island in order to save those left behind.
Act 3 opens with the Dharma Initiative on the island in the 1970's. We have finished the first half of Act 3 (Season 5) and Season 6 will become the second half.
It kinda reminds of what Knauf intended on structuring the arc of Carnivale by making every two seasons a book in a mega-trilogy.
