Speaking of sound, the environmental sound effects were very nice. As a kid, I had that cassette tape of Classic Trek sound effects, and one of the first ones was that really long "alien planet" soundscape one. The new version really captures that feel while also seeming like it could be an icy, windswept wasteland.

I dislike Hoth-type ice planets. Why is it snowing? Where does the snow come from? Where is the water vapor coming from?

Real ice planets should be cold and windy, with a hard ice surface that just stretches, with no snow ever falling.

By the way, we don't really know if it is actually an ice planet.
That's a name we gave to it before we even knew it was Delta Vega and had to call it something.

For all we know Kirk could just be in one of the poles. Or it could just be winter in that location he is.

Do we know that it's a complete ice planet? He might just be in a polar region.

Or it could just be winter in that location he is.

Especially since the big red creature is hardly adapted for cold climates--it's skinny, has no insulating fur or fat yet looks like it's perfectly capable of spending time on the surface. I have a hard time believing it's adapted for that environment if the weather is cold and snowing all the time.

We've been to Delta Vega before in TOS.

There was no ice.

Since they're somewhat-related in terms of continuity, we can assume that Delta Vega has a climate that... GASP, varies from region to region.

I think that may be a first for a planet in a scifi/adventure flick.

I don't think so. Besides being apparently native to a planet well outside the Klingon Empire, this one looks to be a lot bigger than the Rura Penthe creatures -- grizzly-bear-sized, say -- and not very doglike in appearance.

I don't think so. Besides being apparently native to a planet well outside the Klingon Empire, this one looks to be a lot bigger than the Rura Penthe creatures -- grizzly-bear-sized, say -- and not very dog like in appearance.

Maybe the Klingon's captured a few of the Bear-size ones and bread them down to a more controllable size... ???
