That works. If that's how it plays out then I can see Jack and Sawyer putting an end to whatever game or cycle has been playing out.Here's my speculation: Smokey isn't planning on escaping with Sawyer, he's grooming him as a replacement. (A "substitute", if you will.) The rules say he can't leave without someone taking his place, just as one of the other candidates will be replacing Jacob.
How well this will work out remains to be seen, since it involves Smokey out-conning a con man.
