I also enjoy th return to the infection storyline but I'm a little confused. Other than Sawyer clearly being way the "d"uck(see: How I met your mother) over Kate I don't see where Kate gets any "comeuppance". (Not that I wouldn't love to see that as I hate her character).

I enjoyed this one quite a bit. It set up a ton of stuff that will be resolved down the road.

Its clear that the regulars are starting to recognize each other and will start coming together.

Sayid and Claire are claimed. Why did Sayid have to take the pill voluntarily and the purpose of the torture. Probably redemption.

Speaking of redemption, Kate is totally irredemable in the alternate timeline. She's just a murderer on the run. I think redemption will come into play for her as well.

Redemption was also brought up with Jack, the people who were hurt and killed helping him. He accepted responsibility and seemed to be OK with Dogan.

What's going on with Aaron and the adoption. In both timelines, it was thwarted. Is there a reason? The psychic had warned against it.

I thought there were great character moments. All in all, it seems I enjoyed this one more than most. Usually I'm a fairly stringent reviewer, maybe I'm getting soft in my old age?! Actually, I think there was a lot more in this episode than most realize.

Mr Awe

...a thought: if we're going to see those recruited by the Others in the new timeline, like Ethan still being a doctor [and Juliet presumably still working for her asshole ex in Portland], then there's still one person we're likely to see the "normal" version of : Ben!!

While I do realize the revelation that Claire and Sayid are infected (much like Rousseau's team and Christian) and there were some nice character moments, speaking for myself I didn't enjoy it much because it was Kate-centric.

It baffles me how the writers keep Kate in the forefront when so many people on every site I visit either have little or no interest in Kate or actively dislike her. (Count me as someone who hasn't liked her since early season 2).

Another thing that bothered me about this episode is watching Sawyer start to walk down this dark path......it's very frustrating as he and Juliet were two of the best characters in the last couple seasons and now Juliet's gone and Sawyer's headed towards trouble.

So, from my perspective I agree with what you're saying about some big things coming out in the episode, it still had too much Kate stuff that didn't really amount to anything at the end of the episode.

I've been thinking about the episode a bit since I've seen it. I might be reaching but is there any possibility that Kate's past has changed? During the scene where she asks Claire if she would believe her if she said she was innocent, I now wonder if is it possible she was telling the truth?

I'm not sure why it would make sense as in the current timeline her step-father had no bearing on the island, or vice versa. I guess it's a possibility though if Sawyer of all people is advising Hurley to watch out for people who would take advantage of him. Hurley's luck has changed entirely; Shannon doesn't want to be freed from her bad relationship; Charlie is trying to kill himself; Locke went on walkabout; and Jack is more of a man of faith.

We don't quite have enough information yet. Just more mystery. :D

I think it's one of those episodes that is obviously there to set up for the next episode. Unfortunately, when you know it's the last season, you prefer every episode to count.

I wish the Losties would time travel back to Season 1 when they went to the Black Rock and have Kate replace Arnzt (?) and endure his fate instead. Dude, you've got Kate all over you.

Or, as I read on a Lost board, Jack should have given the pill to Kate to "see what happens".

i wonder if the writers are fans of deep space nine..
the baseball business reminded me of sisko.

I thought about Sisko too.

I've decided to blame Edward Kitsis & Adam Horowitz on this one.

This is their track record:

Season 1:

Season 2:

Season 3:

Season 4:

Season 5:

Season 6

They've now have two certifiable clunkers (Fire+Water, What Kate Does) on their record.

Wow, we're nerds. I watched this ep with my brother, and as soon as he saw the baseball he said, "It's Benjamin Sisko!"

And then we had a nerdy discussion about how Jacob and NotLocke are really Prophets, and that the island is the Celestial Temple.

I thought the Sisko thing as well. :alienblush:

But Jacob has been guiding the characters all their lives, so if the island was destroyed Jacob probably died and everyone's life went slightly differently. ;)

I've been assuming since season 1 that each of them was selected to by the island to be on that particular flight so that they would end up on the island and there has been numerous confirmations of this throughout the show, including Dogen in this episode. But if the island doesn't exist then why were they all on that flight in the JJverse?

Nice breakdown, though I really disagree that What Kate Does is as weak as Born to Run, Everybody Hates Hugo, and Dave, which are all among the worst of Lost.

I think you nailed the weakest writers on the show, though. I like DOC and Greatest Hits a lot, but every single one of their other episodes, even the ones that have fun plot bits like He's Our You and This Place is Death, or good scenes like Tricia Tanaka is Dead have something very off about them. Sort of like how The Variable was hyped as being the follow-up to The Constant, both in regards to plot and emotion, but it ended up leaving me cold, considering how much potential was really there.

You know what I think it is? Almost all of those episodes have either dumb plot holes, bad comedy, or mysteries that don't go anywhere.

Stupid plots:
-Hurley's solution to everyone possibly hating him when he has to distribute the food? Blow it all up!
-Kate did everything...for a toy plane
-Charlie goes nuts to baptize Aaron. But wait! He's not using! He's just dumb.
-Everything is in Hurley's head. It's a dream and Dave is real.
-Jin is alive and getting his birthing wife a panda! But he's not and it's a useless flashback in Sun's flashforward episode!
-Jack's appendix bursts
-Jin hangs with Rousseau's team, which is cool. Then it's over within the first fifteen minutes, which isn't.
-Daniel's plan to make the Others do what he wants is to charge into their camp waving a gun. He gets shot. D'oh!
-Claire gets into Kate's taxi after Kate hijacks it. Then covers for her. Because Kate is awesome, toy plane or not.

Mysteries and plot-points never really followed up on:
-Libby in the mental institute.
-The Island gives Charlie visions to get Aaron baptized.
-Sawyer's daughter (aside from being a reason to hook Kate up with Cassidy later on. Said daughter is never seen)
-Charlie's ring and note left for Claire.
-Who the Economist actually is. Probably Widmore, but it's never clear.
-The Island not healing Jack when his appendix bursts.
-Dharma's crazy LSD torture hippie. Just there in case an Iraqi shows up, I guess.
