So recently I've been talking with my girlfriend about lord of the Rings and Dune.I find Dune to be superior to the lord of the rings but she takes the opposing view. So what do the rest of you say

Apples and oranges, they're two very different beasts. For personal preference though, I do enjoy reading Dune much more.
On the other hand, as far as film goes Peter Jackson beats the hell out of Lynch.

"even if I have to go to the East-of-East and fight Giant Were-Worms in the Last Desert..." -- The Hobbit, chapter "An Unexpected Party"

Lord of the Rings all the way

I have never read any of the books, but I found LOTR FAR BETTER than Dune. I didnt understand it and it was boring. LOTR kept my attention and I anxiously awaited the last two movies in the series.

Dune is much better.

Unless you're talking the David Lynch film.

Well the Lynch movie did have a good sound Track and Patrick Stewart but other then that I laughed at parts parts that were supposed to be serious especially the end where Paul basically kills all the Sandworms.

It's been awhile since I last saw the Lynch film, but ... I didn't think the sandworms were killed at the end. Paul and the other Fremen simply rode them in through the barricade, didn't they?

The Lynch movie did indeed have a good soundtrack. I think it was by Toto. The Dune and COD miniseries were more closer to the novel.

Anyway, I like the Dune series more. It's much more mature and sophisticated.

Explain what you mean by "much more mature and sophisticated".

They weren't killed at the end, the Fremen did ride in on them in the big battle at the end of the movie and in the longer version they were posed to destroy the main supply of spice.

The Dune novels deal heavily with various subjects like religion, ecology and politics. It wasn't just mindless sci-fi action.

You didn't see it on screen, but, yeah, they pretty much were.

SOMEONE had the bright idea of Paul being able to make it rain to show his super powers.

So he made it rain.

All over where they had just had a metric buttload of Shai Hulud.

And you KNOW what water does to a sandworm.

Um, and what about The Lord of the Rings isn't mature and sophisticated? Aside from Tom Bombadil. :p

Or are we talking movies? Confusing, this is.

You can't really compare both series 1:1.

Lord of the Rings is a fairy tale written by a professor who was iffed that Britain didn't have this rich collection of legends, fairy tales and stories most other countries had (apart from the Arthur saga) and so he invented LotR - a grand story about the eternal fight of good vs. evil.

Dune is much more socioeconomical and "true" Science Fiction as it takes a future setting to deal with or represent immediate real world concerns such as OPEC (in the guise of the Guild and MAFEA) controlling a vital and unique ressource (oil vs. Spice) and the power struggles of major blocks, i.e. Atreides vs. Harkonnen (the West against the East Block) and so on.
Further novels even digged deeper into sociology, religion and politics wrapped around fantastic elements.

As to the movies LotR wins hands down for being one of the all time best book adapations ever seen on screen. Dune (Lynch version) had a very good set design, i.e. how i envisioned it when reading the books but it took great liberties (unecessarily) with story elements (weirding modules explaining the strength and skill of the Fremen? Really? :wtf::wtf:) up to totally ruining the ending.

I can actually tolerate reading Dune. Tolkien's writing style, however, is absolutely abysmal and bores me to tears. I mean (warning: hyperbole incoming) he spends twenty pages describing a single blade of grass. It's ridiculous.

If you just go with the jist of the stories, however, I much prefer Lord of the Rings. I've never been a fan of actual or pseduo post-apocolytic settings and that's pretty much how I define Dune in my head. At least as far as the story itself is concerned if not the actual universe.

You should read the Silmarillion. There is all you ever need about religion, ecology and politics you ever need. Sure, it is made-up religion. But it is as sophisticated as a man's life-work can be.

Yeah but there's no sandworms in the final wide shot at the end just before the credits and he only made it rain in the city.
