Ha, let the fireworks begin!
All reasonable concerns and I do worry about the lack of detailed source material (you're right about Game of Thrones). I'm hoping that since the two guys who are running the show are such devoted Tolkien fans and recognize the pressure of the situation that they'll be able to stir the show in the right direction.A quite indepth article, very interesting.
However i still can't shake the feeling it may fizzle out.
As the article itself says studios are hunting for the next Game of Thrones but that was lightning in the bottle - a perfect storm of fantastic books as the source, fantastic actors and great production value ( that got even better once HBO realized they have a massive hit in their hands).
This show is lacking the very first element - while it works off the annotations by Tolkien it was not written out indepth as the LotR books were, so you have people writing it now which can be hit or miss ( remember GoT after the books ran out as source material?)
I don't know anybody from the cast but granted i also didn't know who Peter Dinklage was prior to GoT, so there might be some surprises and future A listers somewhere in that cast.
Production value - well, when you're pouring Amazon money into the project and have the complete backing of Bezos it will look great but Disney Star Wars Sequel trilogy also looked great so..
I'm not trying to take a dump on the show, i love Tolkien's universe and the LotR movies are sacred to me ( as are the books) so i hope they pull it off and have me glued to the screen whenever a new episode airs. It is just too many uncertainties to be sure and the only way to know is to watch it when it comes out.
They have strict expectations if their fantasy races. I've heard Tolkien fans reject Haldir as an Elf.Oh good grief. I see that the folks on theonering.net are having a collective meltdown for the show "daring" to include people of colour. What is wrong with these people *sighhh*
Indeed. In some parts of theonering the films are basically persona no grata because of how they interpret the books. There are some who dislike all the Elves (and Aragorn!) in the movies just because none of them are well over six feet tall like they're described as being in the books.
It is extremely hard and there are times I genuinely want to throw my hands up and give up. My wife and I have really fun discussions as she is a massive LOTR fan and has read the books multiple times, and stayed up on the news. But she also has to provide feedback to members on theonering to be more civil. It's ridiculous. It’s nice to see a reasonable discussion here. Just about everywhere else it seems all I see is “it’s woke, woke, go woke go broke” or “it looks like shitty cosplay. It all looks like cheap garbage”. It’s just getting harder and harder to find decent places to discuss anything in a reasonable and respectful way. It doesn’t matter the subject. It’s especially hard in the area of SF/fantasy.
Crazy how TrekBBS has become the reasonable corner of the Internet. Waaay back in the day, that kind of shit definitely happened here. It’s nice to see a reasonable discussion here. Hell, when I left another Trek forum and came to BBS the conversation was infinitely more polite. Same with leaving a Star Wars forum.Crazy how TrekBBS has become the reasonable corner of the Internet. Waaay back in the day, that kind of shit definitely happened here.
We sure did.Hell, when I left another Trek forum and came to BBS the conversation was infinitely more polite. Same with leaving a Star Wars forum.
Y'all got old![]()
For me, the Second Age is one that I am least familiar with, and least likely to feel much attachment too. I have appreciate the designs of the swords and livery thus far, but I will be really curious how they bring all these different characters together.
I don't think that's quite right. In fact, one of my clients guessed my age at 50 just yesterdayWe sure did.
Now get off my virtual lawn, you damn millennial!![]()
What I gleamed from the article is that they're doing a slow build up to the creation of the rings as suggested by the idea that Sauron is still in hiding and acting as an unknown source. Plus Celebrimbor has been cast. What I'm wondering right now if the Rings will actually be created during the first episodes of the show, or if that will be already in the past and the show will begin with the War of the Elves against Sauron. In either case we would have to see Gil-Galad in some capacity, so I'm surprised he's not announced yet.
Actually we already know that Númenor is going to play a big part in this series and it's been speculated that we'll eventually get to see its downfall. The most detailed material for the Second Age has to do with the island kingdom of Numenor, which is far away from Middle Earth and the events of this series, though I could see them focusing on Numenor for the second season (assuming the show lives that long)
Yeah, I figured I was off the mark on that. But I decided to lean into that as part of the joke.I don't think that's quite right. In fact, one of my clients guessed my age at 50 just yesterday![]()

The photos came from this big Vanity Fair story. Lots of new information!
I actually prefer my elves, both males and females, to have long hair. The skin colour is a non issue for me because we have the drows in elven mythology. But seeing Elves like a young Elrond and Arondir with short hair is kind of weird for me.
I am still looking forward to watching the show when it comes out.
