Spoilers Lord of the Rings TV series

I don't know enough about the barrow-wrights background to know how you could or couldn't fit them in the show, but I always appreciate seeing new elements of the source material brought into an adaptation.

To be clear I'm not bothered by the barrow-wights appearing, I'm used to the show being weird with the lore at this point, I just found it interesting to compare the actual lore to the show.

Thinking about it, you know who I'd like to see cast in the show? Celeborn and Celebrian. The fact that we're getting Tom Bombadil and the barrow-wights before Galadriel's husband and daughter, both of whom are definitely alive at time the rings are forged, feels a bit ridiculous. Heck, Celebrian was over 1300 years old when the one ring was forged, so its not like they'd have a kid actor to deal with.

I honestly wonder if there is some bizarre rights issue with the characters, or if the show for some reason doesn't want to acknowledge that Galadriel in the show is (I think) the second oldest elf in Middle Earth at this point and has a family. Maybe its because its harder to explain her being so reckless if they acknowledge her relative maturity? They barely wanted to acknowledge that she was even married in Season 1, and made an artifical reason why she was seperated from her husband.

I like the show a lot, but it is quite the enigma when it comes to why it does or doesn't do certain things.

Their participation in the story is more my interest, rather than whatever lore concerns people.

We've got our first look at Cirdan the Shipwright

He looks pretty good. I wonder how confused more casual fans will be by an Elf with a beard who looks a bit old. Considering the fact that he's probably the oldest elf in Middle Earth, and probably one of the first elves to awaken on Arda in general, he's looking pretty good.

I don't know the actor, but they've got the look down at least.

What chapters in the Simarilliion should I read before jumping into this series. I never did watch the first season.

Not really required, and the Silmarillion is better as a collection of stories or myths, than read as one continuously story.

The series doesn't have to rights to the Sil, so they are utilizing more the appendices for references than this book.
I am thinking none. The less you read, the more you'll enjoy the show
Tell that to my wife and I.

If you really want a little background, read the bits about Numenor.
Specifically, the back matter after The Silmarillion proper has ended. "The Akelebeth" and "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age".

Instead of any chapters from The Silmarillion, The Fall of Númenor may be a better choice.
You certainly get more detail than you get in the Silmarillion or the Lord of the Rings appendices, and speaking personally I loved the book, but two people that I have recommended it to didn't care for how the story was reconstructed through Tolkien's notes. A common critique from both of them was that it felt like sitting through a or reading a dry history lecture.

Thats actually the book I bought and read first because of Rings of Power. I think its really good and gives a well organized account of Numenor from its rise to its fall, and has a few very interesting tales it it as well. Being organized chronologically I found it a breeze to get through, although I guess that depends on the person. It definitely helped kickstart my desire to read all the expanded LOTR stuff, including The Silmarillion.
