Lorca is a coward and murderer, how come he's a Starfleet Captain still??

Best guess is that whatever Lorca did to his ship seemed like a good idea at the time, and the results did do something that helped the war effort, thus gaining him his next ship. It doesn't mean he feels proud of what he did. In fact he is tormented by it every day by his own choice to keep his damaged eyes. He blew up his ship to prevent capture by the Klingons. Somehow he survived. Whatever the result was, Starfleet was pleased with it enough to give him another command.

For all we know, he had gone out in the shuttle to try to lure more enemy ships into the blast area of his ship...take out as many Klingons as possible. But his shuttle was damage, or knocked out of the blast radius by something and when his ship exploded, it took out all the Klingons, leaving him alone. The blast of all those ships exploding would have been bright enough to damage his eyes. He was either picked up by another ship, or he managed to get the shuttle's warp drive working and headed back to a starbase alone.

Remember that Captain Picard once tried to lure an enemy energy thing away from his ship and instead it blew up his ship and tossed him into the past.

Theories on interwebs are Lorca n possibility Landry are from the Mirror universe

The phrase that opinions are like aholes has been expanded,

thanks to the internet it's now "theories are like aholes, everyone has one"

though I have to say I like that theory, but to bust it out in season 1 would be a mistake, the complexity involved I think would kill what little momentum the show has managed to gain. Kinda like Isaac's show Awake.

Keep your first season a bit on the simpler side, there is already enough diversity of plot.

Nah - that would be a two-part episode at least. ;)

In TNG's - "The Battle" we found Picard won't fire back regardless of what's happening (and is willing to let his crew suffer and die for that principle. It cost him the Stargazer too. But, after the inquest, what does Starfleet do? Give him the 1701-D.

Actually, even the show (nevermind the Buried Age books) showed Picard was seen as an incompetant captain, was shunned by most of Starfleet, lost many friends and became an isolated, bitter man. TNG was him being given another command after nearly 20 years of boot kissing and good behaviour, learning how to be a rounded human being again and not the loner asshole he'd let himself turn into.

His name was dragged through the mud and his antagonism with many old colleages was meant to be have been over this. It nearly ruined his career. Lorca did something far more inhuman and got the state of the art weapon of war in no time.

I gues that S31 provide Starfleet Command with ground breaking technologies by doing so it expects some recognition like a ship serial number because it is full with S31 technology. See S31 as a sort of Deep State.

1031....10/31....Halloween.

That is all there is to it.
Still i think S31 is heavily involved. Stuf that is going on with Trump (fack news), warmogering comments comments, the so called Deep State and it so called influence ets etc makes the sinister S31 populair for the screen writers.
