Loose Ends Left Untied

Dr. Crusher

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Are there any loose ends that weren't tied up at the end of the series (or even the films) that you wish had been tied/explained/discussed further? Or other topics that were touched upon but never discussed at length throughout the series?

I'd say that at the top of my list is Guinan. I don't think that "Time's Arrow" really fully explained her relationship with Captain Picard. And, although she and Q were adversaries, that was never explained much, either.

I wish Geordi had one successful relationship somewhere during the show. The whole "Geordi is a relationship disaster" got really old, and, after a while, it seemed unrealistic.

It would have been interesting to see what happened to a number of characters that appeared in the show, such as the crew of the other Starfleet vessel in "Cause and Effect" (another Kelsey Grammer appearance wouldn't have been a bad thing), the other race in "Darmok," or even Dr. Pulaski.

Other thoughts?

What happened to Lt. Ro Laren?

What happened to Ensign Robin Lefler?

What happened to Ensign Sonya Gomez?

Yes, I realize these are all female characters. I'm interested, for real!

The novel 'Ship Of The Line' by Diane Carey was a very good treatment of this, I have always thought. Even if it did suffer the fate of most ST novels - getting run over by canon.

What happened to Lt. Ro Laren?

While I know Ro Laren was originally intended to take the role that eventually became Major Kira on DS9, I think I would have rather enjoyed Ro as a minor recurring Maquis character instead. She joined the Maquis in TNG; it would have been cool to see her role continued, even if Michelle Forbes didn't want to be a regular cast member.

What happened to Ro, Sito (assuming she isn't dead for real) and Tom Riker (post DS9, I suppose) would be my big ones. Also, I'd liked to have seen Shelby again, although she wasn't a lose end as such.

Always kind of wondered what became of Julianna Soong, or the android thereof that is. It seems as of late that the universe is running low on Soong type androids, & were people to want to keep that bit of Human genius alive, her existence & discovery would be of great importance

What ever became of the Picard vineyards after the death of Robert & Rene? I mean it was in their family for generations (No pun intended)

How come we never see the remaining junior officers from Lower Decks in any further episodes? The point of an episode like that should be to introduce a few new folks, not do a one-off. The lame white boy got promoted to Ops at the end, & the Vulcan seemed pretty involved in Geordi's crew at the time too. That all just stopped mattering? The other guy, the waiter or bartender? Is he connected to Guinan somehow? Where the hell did he come from & where the hell did he go right after?

Disposable characters is one thing, but disposable crew is a bit harder to swallow, especially so quickly & so many

What about Maddox's work? Data seemed to think he was onto something and expressed an interest in cooperating once Maddox was ready. Did he ever get anywhere?

The Vulcan ended up on Voyager, with a slight name change to fend off possible IP claims by the writer of Lower Decks.

and Tom Riker (post DS9, I suppose)
Well, last we saw him, he was serving a life sentence on a penal colony. I'd be surprised if anybody actually bothered to rescue him.

Also, I'd liked to have seen Shelby again, although she wasn't a lose end as such.
Have you ever read the "New Frontier" novels by Peter David? Shelby is one of the main characters.

Why unrealistic? Because in real life, everyone ends up happily ever after with a loved one?

Because *Forever Alone* doesn't exist in the 24th century?

This is the reason I was going to give for this as well. You can't resurrect a character without paying royalties to the individual who developed the character initially.

This is the same reason Tom Paris was created for Voyager instead of simply using the backstory of Nick Locarno, from The First Duty (the same episode we're introduced to Ensign Sito). Also why we don't end up seeing Chakotay before Voyager, even though he should have been in Journey's End.

I would perfer personally, that the vineyard remained in the Picard family somehow.

Marie inherits, a romance springs up with a Picard cousin over time and they marry.

Or possibly, in a surprise move, Robert leaves the vineyard in his will to Jean-Luc himself. Captain Picard gets one of his relatives in France to operate the vineyard as his agent. In time Picard will leave the vineyard to said relative.

All in the family.

:)

According to TV Tropes (for whatever that's worth):

To complete a common pattern, T'Pol was originally written to be T'Pau, a Vulcan priestess who appeared in the Original Series and in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. But since it was thought at the time that reusing a character would force them to pay royalties to the writer who created the original T'Pau, the character was changed. T'Pau did appear in the fourth season during a story arc on Vulcan. It was some years later that a judge in California ruled that such a reuse would not force a producer to pay royalties to the original writer. (This, incidentally, is one of the reasons why Nicholas Locarno in TNG became Tom Paris in Voyager).

1: The actual first contact in "First Contact" where that planet's people's government kept the truth of alien life, dismantled the warp project, and so on, just to keep the wishes of that jerk with glasses who martered himself, going...to maintain the traditions, and keep the status quot going. I mean it disgusted that one scientist chick to the point of going, "F*ck you, you self righteous jerks, I'm leaving with the Enterprise!" I want to see what happens, since it's a familiar story, is it not?

2: The aliens from Haven, if they ever got cured of the plague.

3: What happened with Ishara Yarr afterwords.

4: The Borg colony with Hugh.

5: Seeing what happened after "The Hunted"

6: What happened after "Up the long ladder"

7: What happened to the Bozeman?

8: What happened to the Stargazer?

9: Did Geordi ever get the girl? And I still think Sonia would have been the best candidate. ;)

^I agree on "Up the Long Ladder" and "The Hunted."

It isn't that Geordi couldn't end up single, of course, but it got to the point in the series where the fans thought "oh, no, this is going to be a disaster somehow..." whenever Geordi and a woman were somehow involved. It would have been nice, maybe, to see Geordi bring a date to Troi and Riker's wedding in "Nemesis," perhaps?
