Looking to buy an external hard drive--any recommendations?

I'm looking to buy an external hard drive with more than 500 GB of storage. Right now I'm looking at the Western Digital Element 1 TB, and a couple other WD drives. Does anyone have any recommendations?

LaCie

Huge variety to pick from, and I give you the Canadian link.

Sometimes cheaper isn't better.. especially when you plan to store a grat deal of info on it.

LaCie and Hitachi have better track records then the newer Maxtor and Western Digital hard drives.

Are there any particular (preferably with higher storage) LaCie or Hitatchi models that are well-reviewed?

I don't know ... I've had many WD drives and none have failed me. Stay away from Seagate, had a few of them crap out suddenly in my years of playing with many, many PC's.

Buy a regular internal harddrive and an external case.

That's also what I would recommend.

I had a long talk with the guy in my computer shop today (by now: yesterday) about what drives to get, I ended up getting the drives he puts in the machines he builds for professional use: a 1Tb WD (at about US$ 100 a piece).

Be aware that 3.5" models require external power whereas 2.5" models can usually be powered by USB alone and are thus even more convenient for portable use than their smaller size/weight would have them appear.

I've had a WD Mybook for three years now. I use it to store all my music, pics and videos. I've never had any kind of trouble with it ever.....
